British Farming Union on TFF

I like the idea. Also think the name 'British Farming Union' has more automatic clout and authority than 'National Farming Union'. It will be a good platform to engage with the media or public from. All you guys need are numbers. The second you guys can legitimately say things: 'our 10,000 members are concerned or believe that...' You have some big clout.

its been talked about for too long and the time seems right

I hope it does get some traction and support as it could be a game changer, if it doesn’t though at least it can not be said that those behind it didn’t try

it will not be easy and it will take time to become effective but you are100% right that all it needs is numbers / support right now

fundamentally the key difference between BFU and existing organisations is OMOV democracy and exclusive farmers only membership - Both VERY important and clearly wanted by a lot of farmers, long overdue IMO

really ? tff is 100% gdpr compliant and has had no data breaches in 12 years of existence

it sells no personal members data

BTW NFU and Red Tractor, crptec, lamma, farmer werkly and cereals etc do sell and share members data !

please stop talking un informed bullocks

ask the bfu (not me ) - can you give me a list of all of nfu members please ? ……….. didn’t think so
Exactly. Isn't that what I said.
Re the NFU I'm not sure what you are accusing them of.

On a serious note. WTF is the BFU going to do with a tenner membership. It obviously is going to run with a donated office and donated time from any officers, who will donate their travel expenses. Even if you get 10,000 members, £100,000 will go nowhere.
If you are going to do this - do it properly

PS I have never and will never claim back any expenses from the NFU.

I don't disagree. Full time employees are needed to be really effective in attending meetings, conferences, meeting MP's, talking to the media etc., but I suppose everything has to start somewhere.

Take Red Tractor (I know that's one single issue). If BFU got sufficient numbers, and had a different opinion to the NFU, it could help force some change. It could be all members jumping ship to their own scheme, and then having more control of their own standards, or it could be greater ability to influence Red Tractor. It's strength in numbers.

Isn’t the best approach direct lobbying of MPs? Clear communication with a membership pointing out parliamentary opportunities to influence policy in a favourable ways would be very useful. Then there could be an internet page where the views of individual MPs could be published. Too many MPs are not forced to publicly state their own views.

End up like FFA.

As Frank Sinatra sings,
That's the beauty of a democratic organisation, OMOV.

Granted if you had an overall Council fed into by a whole load of committees, boards and representatives filled with like minded, misguided individuals running things, it could be a complete disaster.

Exactly.
Is this PR executive going to run the BFU on their own? From home? With no PA? And no additional budget?
One volunteer is worth two pressed men.
So will this volunteer be a full time farmer? Or someone on the gravy train looking down from his Ivory Towers?

I can't believe I'm having this conversation. I am the only one not dreaming?
Perhaps I am dreaming. Some one is going to set up a national lobbying organisation, spend several days a week in Westminster, run an office with backroom staff, travel the country talking to farmers running all sorts of different businesses to gauge opinion and operate elections with OMOV all for a £10 year membership, with a maximum number of members restricted to 50,000 at 100% takeup. Wheat was £1000 tonne and a Fendt 939 ran on free electricity and cost £1500 brand new and Nitram was £50 tonne. And then I woke up.

Could spend years lobbying an MP getting him or her onside and then they bring their iPhone out in the chamber
