They look amazing, you're crossbreed aren't you?
Just been to check her, she's eaten, drank, calves we're sucking and she's just chased the dog across the field so I think she's doing OKCongratulations.
Ps better make that 3 bottles of calcium
Hereford Bull in the back right?
Most experts tell us to breed replacements from heifers for max. genetic gain, but yours sounds a good approach. Two Hereford bulls. We never AI heifers, would rather know they're going to be OK before we get heifers from them.
They're viking reds and monty x red x freisians. And the blasted Ayrshire that won't get in calf

What do you reckon your total intake is?26l off grazing and 4.5kg 18% at the moment. Probably around 310 autumns and 35 springs.
It’s been awhile since I’ve been around non Jerseys. I’ve never taken a picture of older heifers like that as they run over and try to lick you as soon as you are spotted

Took my soil thermometer with me to move the fence. It's a cool 7⁰c .
Also never AI’d a heifer, especially now sexed semen works so well. Top 30% of cows to sexed everything else to beef.We have never ai’d a heifer for that exact reason Hereford or Angus bull here
Normally work on 15kgdm of grass. Usually would be on 16% cake by now and a bit less of it but with it being so dry don’t think the grass is as high in protein as not so lushWhat do you reckon your total intake is?
if I work that out assuming 25% protein grass your total protein % is like 23%. Maybe room for savings with less purchased protein?
Only milking 6 so far, from bought in cows, they were quite wild as heifers but all are very quiet to milk. They milk better than I thought and the quality is very good. We will calve more from our own cows next year so hopefully I will still like them. How do you find the montys?

Sorting through some old papers today from the 1990’s. The AI paperwork had licence no etc on. Interesting comparing the feed price / milk price, admittedly our constituents weren’t very good in 1995 which is when I think the costing were from. At least we don’t have to deal with the red tape of milk quotas any more!View attachment 1034739View attachment 1034741View attachment 1034743
