Sorting through some old papers today from the 1990’s. The AI paperwork had licence no etc on. Interesting comparing the feed price / milk price, admittedly our constituents weren’t very good in 1995 which is when I think the costing were from. At least we don’t have to deal with the red tape of milk quotas any more!

No but be enough to wash the fert in, grass is a bit yellow from lack of fert but I've been hesitant to spread in case it goes to waste (£1000/t keeps me on my toes!)

Looking wet next week though 🤞👍

I think you're being optimistic about how much rain is coming. All of mine has pretty much disappeared in the last 24 hours and my seed mixes are staying safely in the bag.

Here's hoping I'm wrong though

started mowing yesterday, f###ing bearing went, spent 2 hours ringing around to find one, no-one has one, 24 hr wait, found a good 2nd hand one, 20 miles away. That included 4 kuhn main dealers. With rain tuesday/wed, want to get it off ! Alternative mower - 5.00 pm
suppose something we have to get used to.
1st, sheep on till end jan, 25 units N
2nd sheep out 13 march, slurry and 40 N, and cut last oct.
From yield, and colour, it must be getting N from somewhere, because its not from the bag.
the first pic, is from our grazing platform, should have been over it once, we just have so much grass, simply can't get around the acres, 31 acres, out of the platform, in total, we put a bit more, aside for grazing, as not so much fert, was going on !
What l can't quite understand, we have some of the highest yields, of grass, l can remember, over 30/40 yrs, with less than half of the normal fert. Really would like to know, thinking of the money we can/have saved. The only reason, l can think of, is N from clover, which some say, it cannot be.

they give some heavy down pours, which may mean 'localised', but getting quite serious now, our stream is now dry, and several springs have stopped running.
Not a lot we can do about it, just have to deal with whatever comes.
Be an unwelcome chance, to see if our 'dry grass' leys, and herbs, perform better than the rrg's, if we have another dry summer, sooner have a benign one though.

Doubt if it is from clover. In a new sward, you don't really get any real N fixation until 12-18 months after sowing. Then, it doesn't really get going until after first cut. Yes the clover itself is there, it starts growing at higher temperatures than grass, but the bacterial activity in the nodules doesn't get going until later again,

If you had a very low winter rainfall there might have been less N leaching over the winter which might have helped.

Just been pointing that out to an organic enthusiast on twatter who was suggesting the way grass was growing this spring there was no need for bought N.
Be a different picture after a wet winter

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
