Electric cars long term owners

Traded in the leaf for a petrol car. Sad. Over it's seven years we put close to 120k miles on it. Total cost per mile c12 pence, that's electric, tin, tyres, service and insurance. But a new leaf of the same spec with longer range was about £35k, with PCP working out close to 75p per mile!
Which model petrol car? I’m sure you’ve done the sums but diesel and petrol are only going one way. I’ve just worked out that 50mpg equates to 18p/mile.

Just put fuel in the car for work tomorrow and paid £1.92/litre for Shell derv.

Driving steady I get 42mpg in the old Dad tank= circa 21p a mile just in fuel. At this rate I'll be paying the NHS for the privilege of an education.

I find it best not to think about the running cost on a pickup that does less than half that mpg... :bag:
Whereas I prefer to know - puts stop to plenty of the “I’ll just pop to get” journeys, especially when most stuff is available on Amazon Prime next day.

Notable my main car has gone from 20k/yr to under 5k miles, by a combination of strategic planning and (admittedly mostly) wfh. That’s a big cash saving.

Even if it worked out cheaper, I can't stump up that much money on a new car. Mrs needs something with big boot for sailing. Queue the much despised estate car. New electric cars are just horrific money for a new one of any type. Not my choice - I just shut up and let Mrs teslacoils choose.

Does a large boot act as a good sail? surely being submerged in water cant be too good for the rest of the car

30 pence a mile in diesel for my 7 year old Hilux calculated from tank full to tank full. I shudder to think what towing the Ifor loaded with store cattle does to consumption.
It focuses the mind on making any journey. Going out for day trips as a break in routine suddenly looks expensive.
Prices at the pumps won’t come down until demand falls off a cliff.

Prices of anything hydrocarbon will remain high until the conflict is settled or evened out. I would think that an economic downturn will be in the offing at some stage if this keeps up.

Interestingly on a recent holiday to Norfolk and back, I counted 3 Ferraris, 3 Audi R8s, 7 Aston Martins including a DBX, 12 BMW M (2, 3 & 5), 2 Maserati Levantis, 20+ Defenders and countless RR, Discoveries and Evoques, 6 Bentleys, 2 McLarens, a good number of AMG Mercs and the odd Corvette
only saw one Model X, 2 Taycans and a Ford Mach E

plenty of Model 3s (which look like someone blowing bubble gum from the front), a few Kia’s and the odd Model 6

‘kin hairdryers

Wife has just put the disco 5 in for a Volvo xc40 😢but not brave enough for electric yet just got the diesel ( tank in yard). She struggled to park it in town and after an expensive looking ding announced she wanted something smaller…..gonna miss it but not it’s thirst.

Struggled to park an XC40? It’s about as small an SUV as you can get, isn’t it?

:banghead: Did I not say I don't want to think about it!! The pickup doesnt do family days out but the car is till few enough mpg.. think I might buy family VR head sets and some seat from a breakers yard and then we can just sit in the lounge and go on vitual road trips instead on the real thing :cautious: at least we wont have to pull over to stop at every services for one child or another...
