I'm starting to use Italian Ryegrass again , not grown here since we sold the dairy herd , plan is to up the seed rate and drill it in , very aggressive so should get away quick , spray out the weeds for a year then when it starts to thin drill in a permanent clover ley

we are thinking about, IRG or w/wold, with vetch, behind wheat, but just as likely, the grass may require a cut, this backend, what would happen to the vetch, would it recover ? for the following spring.

Been doing that for years and it works very well as the Italian starts to lose its production stitch a more permanent ley in works well for getting rid of weeds too.
Spray out the docks etc in the Italian mix.

Really pleased and the customer is I’ve got a few others on the system now burn off old ley from now on either rape and stubble turnips or a mixture graze them through back end spray off any weeds the following spring then put in Italian ryegrass or a blend with westerwolds.
(Going off westerwolds) as I think straight Italian blend or some hybrid included works better.
Utilise the forage for 2 years and then DD a permanent ley with clover back in works well I find and you can hammer docks in the Italian without any fear of clover damage.
Check any residuals though when putting the new ley in after the Italian mix.

Common vetch won't, bit of a one hit wonder , more chance with winter vetch
would probably be winter vetch
whether its climate change, or changing climate, our summer grass growth seems to struggle more, every year, even in the few dry spells last year, we lost growth.
So, we have to work around that fact, even if it doesn't continue, and it wasn't that many yrs ago, we had to bring the cows back in, in june, because it was so wet.
We have been growing hybrid rye, which has a huge potential yield, 15/20 t/ac, tried it with vetch, last year, cut, back into maize, which works on our 'bottom' fields where there is moisture, for longer, giving a total yield 30 t/ac ish. Timings a bit to tight on that, one or the other suffers.
But, its looking like we need to really exploit early growth potential, while maintaining quality. This spring, we have had a massive first cut, should be quality to, and early grazings were good, got to now, things are going pear shaped, grass has slowed right down, prg going to seed at 6/7 ins, only other grasses, clover and herbs still going.
We farm good sandy free draining soil, and l wonder if, by regular subsoiling, we have increased the drying out part, we compact very easily, so anal about pans.
Not really sure what the answer is, pretty well stopped ploughing, so soil structure is improving, growing 'drought' tolerant grasses. So, my sought of solution, max 1st cut, let the cows have what they need, all summer, cut what they don't, and rely on a late cut, to top up silage stocks, and the maize.

Does the Italian get grazed hard in the winter befor you DD the permanent ley in?
Wonder if I could do something similar as I get issues with docks an general weed in the first year an just end up killing clover.

we use a vadeerstat, discs, it can create quite a tilth on top, if you cross drill, only shallow though, still not sure if that is good, or bad ! Overseeding, definitely 1 pass only.
Always thought modern drills, such as ours, were way overpriced, till we bought ours, 2nd hand, they are so versatile, and accurate. The other thing we found out, it very soon paid for itself !
