Strikes

Except, of course - it aint the drivers on strike. They are mostly in Aslef.

It's the ancilliary workers on strike (who, along with the drivers would have been key workers and would have worked during lots of the pandemic).

I am not sure what the situation is with the railways, probably a cocked hat of course. But the airlines, I have zero sympathy for. It should have been illegal for airlines to shed staff whilst at the same time receiving government bailouts. Our government has been far too soft on big business for far too long.

The situation (to me) seems to be that foreign owned companies pick and choose what parts they want to own. The tracks and stations (apart from the shops) are nationalised, but the trains aren't - so we, the taxpayer pay for all the lossmaking parts and the profitable bits are owned by investment companies who make millions each year off our national transport network.

the whole setup is a farce then isnt it.
UK GOV should be incharge of it all but we all know regardless of who is in charge that will be very shoddy run business also.
You cant win.

Privatisation was always going to be a scam, but it suited an agenda. Most other European countries see it as being in the national interest to keep vital infrastructure in the hands of the state - but we've chosen to attempt to let the market decide.....

i see first hand the amount of money wasted on the east coast rail network as it passes through the land i farm here
big project 18months ago to renew two culverts to help shift standing water faster away from either side of the line basically
The red Tape is mental off the scale & the costs also the same.
i get H&S is paramount with all this type of work of course.
I know this has little to do with current strikes also
I once knew a lad who worked for Network Rail & Balflour Beatty before them who did all the rail maintenance & mind they could spend money.

I used to work with someone who had been retired from working on the tracks because of lung issues, so inexplicably, he came to work for me at a hatchery.

The big bit of their job that you don't see is picking up body parts when people decide to commit suicide by jumping in front of trains......

Got a gang of about a dozen network rail in village at moment.

Highways gave them a 21 day notice to cut roadside hedges by a bridge.

Rather than trim them back and top them off they're cutting a hundreds of yr old hedge back to stumps then putting up post and rail. No issues about nesting etc.

Not working tomorrow because they're on strike too.

Network rail have magic money taps!!

I think the drivers (sensibly) get compassionate leave, its the psychological damage too, I guess.

The bloke I was mates with said heads often travel some distance - he's picked them out of freight carriages some way back from the engine.

Problem is its a quick, and therefore popular way to do it.

Being the bizarre, socially awkward and hugely inappropriate humour of gentleman that I am, I often introduce my train driving friend 'as a guy who kills cows for a living', leaving the rest of the audience hugely but equally perplexed and horrified until he can explain himself.

It must be a tremendous pyschological event to witness something like that.

I have had the misfortune to recover heads and put in body bags with the main torso twice. Both motorcyclists .

I can fully understand why three suicides and train drivers get compassionate leave

Incidentally the train driver also does all the pre journey checks, routine maintenance and coupling etc .

The older yellow Railway vans often turned up & parked on the bridge & it was hours after before anyone actually did any work.

Speaking of Royal Mail - there was talk only a few months back that they were planning to do parcel deliveries on a Sunday. I haven't seen or heard anything more. I wonder if that plan has been shelved due to lack of staff?
