Some heifer calf’s brought in today rest in tomorrow only leaves far away in calf heifers outside starting to feel like winter 🙄
Im assuming you have high, open modern housing. The weather is really mild for bringing stock in. Have cows in at night and 20 beef in for finishing Nov.
This has been best year ever for me. Cows went out 19th Mar and stayed out( no snow in April). In theory we are into the eighth month of grazing!
Finished next week ☹️..no more grass. Have to keep a wee bit for next March.
Should have made loadsamoney. Feckin fertiliser!

I can't understand how people who can talk about being careful with thier slurry, and not to waste it etc with the price of fert. Plenty if things I'd be short of, but never slurry.....

I give slurry away every year in return for silage ground and paper acres, even they don't really want it in October. Plenty of storage is no bad thing.

Why are you matting? Teagasc did trials and found no difference in beef cattle performance, matted v concrete. If it's for dairy stock, surely you don't want to encourage them to lie on slats? Been in a few pens with green plastic mats. Very slippery.

I wasn't aware of a trial on mats. General purpose, dairy heifers or beef. I'd have thought it's bound to help thrift in young cattle.

My heifers are in cubicles from about four months until calving, except for a short period mid way where slatted pens are the only available housing. It doesn't seem to affect them in terms of training, as I've only had one lier in the last ten years that I can remember.
