i did see you can get bigger batteries but we have lots of 5’s about already

i bet a 12 is expensive ?

I seem to recall the cheapest 12Ah I saw was nearly £125, or could have been bought with my saw for £100.

If you're happy to swap the batteries more often, and have a pile of them already, then it surely makes sense to use them if you are only doing small jobs like a Gator full, or a bit of fencing.

Whilst it looks to many a cheap upgrade to many tools makitas twin 18v tools run at 36v. I've had petrol chainsaw out today as there was some bigger stuff and as good as cordless are (and I've not used petrol for a while now) i fast realised what I've been missing.

I don’t have a chainsaw, but noticed that a 9” grinder or big leaf blower overheats 5ah batteries, whereas the 12ah lasts proportionally longer as it’s cooler for the whole time.

If you ever see a 12ah in the sales I’d highly recommend it for the bigger equipment

Nothing more than an expensive toy then.
but l only bought a small one.

i'm not very fit, and cannot use a petrol one, so for me, it's seriously good, the 1 battery lasts about the same time as l do.

A bigger, or 2 battery one, should be a lot better, it's horses for courses, this horse, needs a very short course !

and yes, it's an expensive toy, that enables me to keep our log burner in logs, and tidy up all the branches that have come down, around the farm, which in turn, makes me feel 'useful'.

i will get one to try

i think even with the 5 it has more torque than our smaller 2 stroke Sthil though

They are for sporadic on off use on light sticks/limbing not a constant proper days work ,not what i call work anyway, maybe what some townie type will call it i guess.

the cost of replacing batteries needs to come into as well because they will be harder ,far harder than say a cordless drill ,takes alot of guts to turn a chainsaw, its powerhungry and will pull batteries down quicker in hard use.
Battery cycles are finite, wetrher they are 5ah or 20

Out of curiosity, is anyone charging these saw batteries off a 12v vehicle, or does it just mean a walk home in the evening?
If you are doing enough to need more than one battery change during your days work you'd be better off with a petrol chainsaw imho.
Obviously if it's the only saw you have then you might need more batteries than that but the cordless tools have their limitations

I've heard of mechanics having a dual battery system on their van so they can isolate a deep cycle battery to recharge grinders etc without ending the day with a jump start.
I don't suppose they'd be going to that expense without some previous experience to prove it's worth!

Does the Milwaukee not need a 12Ah battery to be much use? Unless you’ve another use for a battery of that size, the cost of them (£150?) surely makes the ‘keep the same battery system’ argument redundant? All your saving is the cost of a £20 charger.

Or do they run ok on 5Ah batteries, with more frequent changing obviously?
Yes you need the high output 12ah
Pretty useless on the 5ah tbh
Good saw though happy with mine
