You should have twice as many ewes and you won’t get many triplets.

I tried that one last year and got told what to do with them

Have tried it before but just end up with small lambs and mastitis at the back end. Will be a no go this year. Forgot to say I have 2 chevs scanned 4 aswell

499 scanned today. Mix of romney, romney x and general x bred ewes that are left over. There was also about 190 odd shearlings in with them.

Happy with that. Will maybe go back to pre tup bolus next year mainly on shearling, just have to be careful as we tend to throw too many triplets if we pre tup bolus.

Would 150-160% be a typical scan for Romney and Romney x ewes?

English romneys yeh, nz type anywhere from 150 to 200 I'd say. 170% is my aim every year anymore and it's too many multiples for our ground.

Any suggestions how to get less triplets but without dropping the empty percentage? Over the years we've stopped flushing, mineral tubs etc. Most lamb as hoggs. Put a couple of hill cheviots over some ewes which i think could help over time but that lot was 220%. So another year scanned the first lot of 559, 12 empty 145 triplets and 209% overall including 160 gimmers. Ewes are mostly first cross texels out mules. Obviously more dead lambs come out the triplets and price of feeding now its not ideal. Maybe just one of these things but would rather drop it 10%+.

I think I've asked this in a previous year, but why do some people take empties out before working out the percentage? Unless they're early lambers who have had more chances and will be scanned again then it gives a false result.

The false result is exactly why they do it

Makes the scan look and sound a lot better for bragging rights

I mean a 200% scanning is so 2010 - I've got 1 group thats scanned a solid 400%

Old blackies to the blue absolutely terrible, a dud tup bought this year that was given both turns. Half empty.
Mule ewes a nice 176%.
Some old blackies kept pure 161%
Blue ewes more singles than anything which is nice. 150%.

It lifts the % considerably with the empties out.
We had 1000 hill swaledales at 213%.....if we took the empties out it would be up about 220% which wouldnt be far off a record.
