Well one things for sure you cannot afford to lose much oil out of that gearbox before you'll run into major problems.
The box doesn't hold a lot of oil, maybe 25 to 30 ltrs.
So get the oil level check immediately at the level bung/filler bung behind the lhs steps.

As for the lever that engages the 4wd this has been added, originally its done via a switch.
The 4wd system uses pressure to keep it in 2wd so it's likely the 4wd pack is either not getting pressure or the pump is knackered...
Is the gearbox seperate to the back end? Is it same on a 895? I have lost hi and low checked electrics out down to solenoid all ok but no high ta.
Got problem suddenly after some heavy lifting with loader

Any other Case 580 diggers on here? This one still earns her keep, despite needing a few seals, pins and bushings.

Is the oil seperate from the rest of the backend? I just put oil in the rear filler, didn’t realise there was different fill points

Oh yes, the gearbox is completely different to the hydraulic oil ( it's the hydraulic oil tank you've been filling at the back of the tractor.
If you look past the steps on the lhs you can see a tin cover plate on the gearbox side, the plate has a bulge in it, it also has a 32 mm bung. That bung is the filler/level bung for the gearbox oil, it uses hytran oil or equivalent.
Also the 2 back axles oils are separate as well, you can see the level bungs on each one of them looking from the back.
The axles hold gear oil, EP90 or similar.

Different tractor as stated, IF your tractor is stuck in low check the clutch safety start switch first, this switch also puts the hi/low into low when you dip the clutch.
It's extremely common for this switch to stick in and thus leave the hi low stuck in low.

There are other causes of course if its not this.

I have traced the electrics down to the solenoid plug and it’s switching as it should. The clutch switch is working ok. It has defaulted to low gear suddenly after driving perfectly. I Have read the old threads which points towards low pressure somewhere or the solenoid. Is there any other silly things?

Yes solenoid can and does fail, they are pretty expensive things as well.
You should be able to hear the solenoid clicking as its switched off and on with ignition only on.
It's also common enough for the wire to break where it goes into the bottom plate where the solenoid is.
The gasket in the bottom plate can blow causing instant loss of power.
Pop a 500 psi pressure gauge in the bottom and see what's happening

I’ll get rigged up with a gauge and get someone in the cab to flick the switch and have a listen too. I was on my own belling the wiring out so jumped up flicked the switch etc . Thankyou
