Well one things for sure you cannot afford to lose much oil out of that gearbox before you'll run into major problems.
The box doesn't hold a lot of oil, maybe 25 to 30 ltrs.
So get the oil level check immediately at the level bung/filler bung behind the lhs steps.

As for the lever that engages the 4wd this has been added, originally its done via a switch.
The 4wd system uses pressure to keep it in 2wd so it's likely the 4wd pack is either not getting pressure or the pump is knackered...

If you look through the nearside cab steps you'll see the transmission oil filler/level bung.
I took a picture of the 844...

Oh yes, the gearbox is completely different to the hydraulic oil ( it's the hydraulic oil tank you've been filling at the back of the tractor.
If you look past the steps on the lhs you can see a tin cover plate on the gearbox side, the plate has a bulge in it, it also has a 32 mm bung. That bung is the filler/level bung for the gearbox oil, it uses hytran oil or equivalent.
Also the 2 back axles oils are separate as well, you can see the level bungs on each one of them looking from the back.
The axles hold gear oil, EP90 or similar.
Hope this helps.

895 totally different setup to 844, 856, 956 etc

Phone is broken and would mess up quotes if I tried replying on the same message so doig a separate one to the above quotes.

I was going to say my 895 Has all the oils in one and was panicking a bit. I'm never sure if there is enough oil in it the dipstick always says there is way too much oil in it but i don't believe it. It was fine till we put a loader on and now it always says there is double the oil it should have looking at the dipstick.

The high low splitter has gone on mine as well so will check what was mentioned

Ive had no end of problems with my 895 xl Power shift.. 1st time i lost High TA i split the tractor and put new ta clutch pack in and all new seals.. sprag clutch was fine.. Worked fine for 2 years.
2nd time was intermittent fault going in and out when in high.. This time renewed all the wiring.. new power supply.. New Earth and New Dash switch and new clutch pedal switch.
3rd time Lost high bottom plate off and found the small loom inside broken and also a weak terminal on the solenoid.. fixed all that with new parts ... seals and some carefull soldering.. Working fine now..
Since bought a Mccormick cx 90 and that has an intermittent fault on the powershift!!!🙄🤯🤯🤯

Since the panicking is over :D I thought I'd share a pic from last summer, using my old 674 to do a bit of rolling before our wedding reception tent arrived on the field.
