Carmarthen Mart

Sent few hundred there, seem good, few buyers there I’d never heard of which is good as never seen less than 5 buyers on the sheep side.
Shame it’s quiet there, shut for too long is the problem I’d say but numbers seem to be growing.

Whether they’ll be able to take a lot of the Emlyn customers with them there is another thing?
There's still a lot coming past Carmarthen up to Builth

Yeah I don’t get that mind? Their passing a few marts to get to builth, hereford fair enough as it’s so much bigger 🤷🏻‍♂️
Yes seems bonkers to me but I don't follow every markets trade to compare them. I know Hereford is bigger but there's plenty of weeks where they've had double the lambs and cull ewes in Builth. Over 5000 several times now.

Seems mad travelling past your local markets with the price of fuel alone, they will all be moaning when they shut and are forced to travel. There isnt anymore cattle in west wales so another market opening has just slackened others abit. I have been to carmarthens monthly sale since it opened and there wasnt any bargains.

At least someone has took it on and is trying to get it going again, once these markets are closed they’re usually gone forever!! The list is long of the markets that are shut an gone, the list of markets being built is very short!! I’d say it wants supporting if the locals want to keep it

All this talk remember it is a mattter of trust built up over time and reducing stock numbers business is developed by competitive bidding <control by auctioneer of dealer rings and single man multiple a/c domination> plus the growth in agent direct sales, have you tried to go round Kidwelly round about on Sunday morning.?

What is Carmarthen market like these days? ( November 2023) - I used to use this mart a lot, as I know others around here always did, and in the min, I always was pleased with results for cattle sold there, but these days and for the past good few years now all the hauliers around our way refuse to or make excuses not to transport stock to Carmarthen market. Does anyone know the reason why this is? I am fed up of being bullied into taking my stock where the hauliers tell me to and I am sure the livestock markets like Carmarthen are fed up of having greatly reduced numbers of stock through the sales ring because vendors cannot get their stock transported to the market because of this problem. If anyone knows of livestock hauliers prepared to transport stock from Vale of Glamorgan to Carmarthen market with the assurance of a return journey if necessary then do please post and let me know.

we need to support our markets and keep as many of them running as possible. It is ok to travel with stock when you are 21 and life is your oyster, but all this long distance travelling at the age of 60 plus is no fun and what about all this talk of food miles and eco friendly and climate change etc. it seems when it comes to the oppression of the farming industry none of that counts. Is it all just another means to killing off the smaller farmers so the board of director run farms can clean up on all the available revenue. the rich getting rich and the poor being made to be poorer.

while other marts like Monmouth and Hereford can boast over 700 head of cattle per week - says it all I reckon. the facilities and the premises at Carmarthen are superb, it is on a main transport route and easy to get to for all size lorries. this should be one of the most thriving markets in the South.

I don't understand why they don't put all the stock on one day ??
I agree with just a 60 day window for TB testing and farmers unable to employ the staff these days, 60 days is gone in no time and all this having to wait a week or a fortnight for a suitable market day does not work. We used to be able to take whatever stock we had for sale on every market day and we did not have TB test windows or restrictions in those days either. If a any market is struggling to survive - Come on! get real and help the farmers to help you. That is what I say!

That is defeatist talk, you should stand up and fight for all our markets to remain open. it is in your best interests and others like you. There needs to be competition - without competition you get dealers running the markets. The best days of stock rearing were when the markets sold direct to the butchers. it is the dealers who are the ruination of our industry and the means to spread TB all over the country.
Do famers ever look at the passports of cattle they buy, I once bought a bunch of cattle I thought were local cattle only to find on inspecting the passports after I had bought them that they had been to six different markets from one end of the country to the other before coming back to the local market near where they were reared. One of those cattle was the subject of a tracing test and had to be destroyed. That is the only case of TB I have ever had in 30 years. Needless to say I have never purchased cattle in market since but keep a closed herd and breed all my own. That one animal had been mixing with cattle all over the country. No wonder we cannot eradicate TB!
