Carmarthen Mart

What is Carmarthen market like these days? ( November 2023) - I used to use this mart a lot, as I know others around here always did, and in the min, I always was pleased with results for cattle sold there, but these days and for the past good few years now all the hauliers around our way refuse to or make excuses not to transport stock to Carmarthen market. Does anyone know the reason why this is? I am fed up of being bullied into taking my stock where the hauliers tell me to and I am sure the livestock markets like Carmarthen are fed up of having greatly reduced numbers of stock through the sales ring because vendors cannot get their stock transported to the market because of this problem. If anyone knows of livestock hauliers prepared to transport stock from Vale of Glamorgan to Carmarthen market with the assurance of a return journey if necessary then do please post and let me know.
I've been having the same problem in finding a haulier to go to carmarthen mart..Ive only sold there once since it reopened and ended up getting a farmer friend to take them in for me last minute..I think there's a general shortage of hauliers as i know a few who have finished..In terms of the mart itself it's picked up a lot and been having 300-400 store cattle in

we need to support our markets and keep as many of them running as possible. It is ok to travel with stock when you are 21 and life is your oyster, but all this long distance travelling at the age of 60 plus is no fun and what about all this talk of food miles and eco friendly and climate change etc. it seems when it comes to the oppression of the farming industry none of that counts. Is it all just another means to killing off the smaller farmers so the board of director run farms can clean up on all the available revenue. the rich getting rich and the poor being made to be poorer.
Just been caught out with thr 60day testing issues. Got 4 store bulls to go and was intending them to be in Hfd market yesterday ...but the penny dropped that as it was the 5th Thurs in the month Hfd didn't have a market . They are out of test today 😒
..Will sell them privately now

Agh good to hear the mart is picking up but the hauliers are still a big problem - I suppose the only answer is to see if the auctioneers st Carms will sort haulage. With half a days movement testing costing over £1000 can’t afford all these shenanigans.
there seems to be some form of boycott going on but what is the root of all this goodness knows!

Sorry, are you replying to me? Carmarthen market makes no difference to my life,I'm sixty miles away and have never been to the new site. I have heard of Whitland market doing a lot more trade but never been there either.
Sorry I was having a frustrated rant nothing personal purely generic. Your all good

The trouble i find is if you don't have a lorry load a lot of hauliers don't want to know or they're full going to mart and won't make the journey to me to pick a few up🙄

Waiting list round here for pre-movement testing and risk of going positive just for 4.
Have just been doing a bit of working out and if I moved them onto one of my other holdings today they would be tested in early Jan in a complete herd test ! ...might do that
60 days between tests just be sure of date of last test

Carmarthen mart seems to be picking up again. Few regular dealers ringside with one from Hfd's neck of the woods. Quality seems to be picking up a bit as well I think. As Derrick said above, Carmarthen mart used to be a hell of a dairy/calf trade with milkers coming down from as far as Oswestry. Facilities are great and modern as well.

Whitland mart naturally picked up a lot of trade from Carmarthen during covid/end of the BJP era.
But Llyr Jones (who is a good auctioneer in my book) seems to be doing a good job of turning things around.

Nock Deighton live stream their Friday store cattle sale on Facebook if you wanted some idea of how things are there.

Give the auctioneers a call they’ll put you on to a haulier no problem 👍
