French protests

The average farmer will have lost half their income.

I have no doubt those that knee jerk sold sheep probably did

My income is okay, just input costs have gone Sky High thanks to Environmental Policy & Ukraine War.

I might be able to get over the former with luck but not the later - not by dodging Policy but by creating some of my own energy. Fertiliser is impossible I think to replace on my own.

You know my place, fancy branching out into consultancy? Probably not, can’t see Clare allowing you off the premises in Mustard trousers!
Quite happy to help though I am still getting my head round some of it, its not as bad as I first thought though, none of it seems much on its own but it soon adds up to be well worth having.

It’s the lack of measurable outcomes that I have a problem with. I am in the hedgerow pilot and had a pleasant lad out from the RPA last week to look at how I have complied with my obligations. No issues (yet) but when asked he couldn’t give me a cogent explanation of what RPA consider is a tree which is fairly basic when it comes to the requirements as I read them.
If that applies elsewhere as I suspect there is lots of scope for conflict with the RPA and life is too short when the rewards don’t stack up against my minimum for the hassle factor.

Well I’m pleased his staff are loyal but as an employer, I personally don’t think it’s a good look to be blasting pheasants out of the air three times a week and then going on holiday.

But then I’m stupid and still work 50 plus hours a week whilst son does considerably more and for some strange reason our staff go the extra mile when asked. Wonder why?
His staff are well paid and go on holiday.
Again. So a successful man should wear sack cloth and ashes?

I’m sure they are & do… just like ours.

I have no problem with your mate being successful but I just think that too much “me” time leads ultimately to resentment no matter how well remunerated you are. Tis a fine line to tread

🤣Meanwhile you've got an ex Dairy farmer, skiing for 5 weeks,
saying UK farmers don't need subs and liking a post calling a farmer who receives Subs " a parasite who needs to learn to farm" while on the next thread UK farmers are asking how to claim universal credit! 🤣
Situation normal, UK farmers carving up UK farmers🤣

Cropable ?
That's a typical price round here for typical land but unlike the UK the price varies a lot according to local market conditions and who is interested locally. By typical I mean probably cropable but usually challenged in some way, definitely not what my old man would have called in good heart. Small fields with few local buyers might not even make 2k a hectare, some are on the market for years. Bigger blocks especially viable farm sizes and the price might double or more because it will be attractive to buyers outside the immediate area.

I am in my 25th year in France and never gone more than 4 years without buying land and I have never paid as much as 2700/ha because I am picking up bits and pieces. If you are looking to buy more than 50 hectares its a different ball game.

I’m talking about staff and how they perceive their boss(es).
It is my opinion only that they like to see the boss at the coalface too - not all the time - but from your post saying he shoots x3 per week in the season and goes off on holiday on a regular basis could lead to resentment
