French protests

That's a typical price round here for typical land but unlike the UK the price varies a lot according to local market conditions and who is interested locally. By typical I mean probably cropable but usually challenged in some way, definitely not what my old man would have called in good heart. Small fields with few local buyers might not even make 2k a hectare, some are on the market for years. Bigger blocks especially viable farm sizes and the price might double or more because it will be attractive to buyers outside the immediate area.

I am in my 25th year in France and never gone more than 4 years without buying land and I have never paid as much as 2700/ha because I am picking up bits and pieces. If you are looking to buy more than 50 hectares its a different ball game.
Very envious

That would have set my boy up well

1979 Barley £130 per ton 2024 Barley £170 per ton

1979 top notch fat lambs £28 2024 fat lambs £140

Arable is bleeding dry & still stock farmers stare at their own navels.
Its the livestock farmer who says he ll quit RT in numbers, not arable

And every one with arable says sheep dont pay!! OR DONT THEY WANT THE WORK

I have both, and RT for now

But there again i dont mind (like/love) single handed lambing NIGHT and DAY

Some on here trying to turn this to asimalate the Brexit thread. As said above the French brought us much support£££££ (except when they burnt the lamb lorry)

Don't believe for one moment the french did it for anyone but themselves( not saying that's wrong) as soon as they face competition they don't like it, it's their culture which is very different to ours,

c,mon man
next you will be calling the french cheese eating surrender monkeys
i admire their push back against what has become a dictatorship of rules from Brussels
the same is happening here in ireland where people who protest against small rural villages and towns being landed with asylum seekers, are being called right wing.
we are being dictated to.
is democracy a fallacy?

Did you read what I posted, I didn't say acting in their own interests was wrong or non democratic, their protests now and in the past are solely down to their own interests they don't care if you in Ireland suffer unless the same reasons you are suffering make them suffer too. It's in their mind set, have you spent much time there ? They have a very different mindset to Brits or the Irish I know
They are at the same time both very generous and extremely selfish, they would want first themselves to be successful, then their family then the locality then the country, they will expect the country first of all to support them, then the locality to support them then their own family as long as that happens life is grand, if it doesn't they protest. The French were the driving force behind the CAP as there was a big issue with rural depravation and depopulation, it worked really well in getting a scheme going to support their rural economies paid for by others, just as Ireland has benefitted enormously from.being members, now you are more prosperous you are having to be net contributors to the EU and have problems with migrants, my best mate moved to Ireland 20 years ago and he told me there was growing discontent over that issue, the same things affected the UK and were contributory factors in Brexit, politicians in both the UK and EU ignored those concerns, the french government knows that to pee off their farmers is a huge mistake the UK government don't give a monkeys about us,

Irish agriculture aligned itself with french because of the similarity with Ireland rather than the large estate ,my lord, earl, type of farming in the UK.im sure Irish lamb as well as British was burned by protesting french farmers.on the other hand, their fight is our fight, indeed the relevance of agriculture to every country needs reaffirming.we need to push that we are food producers, not countryside polluters.

If you read this link you might think differently, some very interesting figures in it

According to Google official figures show the average farm size in Ireland is 32 ha, France 69 And UK as a whole 77 of which 64% of that is owned, so I'm not sure what you think is actually accurate.
I also found figures that showed the numbers of french farms have dropped by 20% between 2010 & 2020.
I completely agree that the importance of farming needs far more shouting about, that is in every country

Silly boy, food comes from supermarkets who needs farmers they just make the place smelly and hold up traffic
that is the disconnect that ends up imposing draconian green rules on agriculture.
what the heck happens if we have a spring of large leatherjacket activity?
stand in a field and ask then not to eat seedlings?
because of globalization i dont think we will ever see a food shortage.
a major snow event that impedes the deliveries might educate just how fragile the whole food chain is

I'm a mixed farmer in Yorkshire.

I admit its unusual but the sheep are subsidising the arable this year.

As for arable farmer been on holiday all winter, I've spent a big chunk of it hand harvesting veg.

I enjoy lambing the fencing & shearing less so.

Ships are very reduced in the Panama canal for water levels.
Ships can't use the Suez canal due to politics leading to attacks.
Ships may become targets in the gulf of Hormuz due to politics.
South China sea looking dodgy due to politics.
Black sea grain dodgy due to war ( politics).
Politics around the world are leading to supply issues.
Bread and Circus stop the masses noticing/ caring
Personally got a good pantry and 2 big freezers.

The sad thing is, food security is a nonsense because

We need parts from China
Tractors from Germany or Turkey depending on budget
Pesticides from China
Fertiliser from goodness knows where
Inspectors from South of Watford.

Without the above, we are in trouble. No matter how well farmers are treated.

I'll be shot down on here , but we need more money for the defence budget.

The UK has the FPTP form of pseudo democracy designed to maintain power in the hands of those of extreme wealth with occasional forays into more evenhanded policies……..
A form of PR(STV) or even MMR would produce a far more equitable society and largely avoid the wild right/left swings for which FPTP is reknowned.
(The 2011 referendum rejected AV for its lack of proportionality)

Pr ain't exactly workin in this country at the minute.
Amazing how arrogant and dictatorial they have become.
We had 2 opposition parties that were the same but had different names and different politicians.
After the last election they went into coalition.
No one to shout stop to them.
Our last line of the defence, the president, signs every draconic law into force.
If they proposed the crusification of jesus again,
He would sign it into law.
