What are the Welsh payments?
They get payments for legumes herbal leys and winter cover simular to SF1 , I'm not sure of the actual rate ,I just supply seed, biggest problem is having to issue new seed labels as they have to show every acres worth of labels to claim , farmers being farmers they get lost in the wind as they fill the seeder

No, the Growing for the Environment payments are around a half to a third of what SFI pays for similar, although we do still get ‘full’ BPS payments at the moment too.
By ‘full’ BPS payment, I mean £65/ac here.

I like having a sad-looking farm

It's big and yellow and brown and full of life

Having been on "well run" farms for most of my working life, the grass is no greener when it's greener, there's just more stress and more reactivity and more cost to try and claw back... a losing proposition ?

Regardless of looks, I would rather be winning than trying hard not to lose

i’m convinced some get the word farming and gardening very mixed up !

Congratulations, you’ve almost got back to the state of those farm environments that never embraced tight rotations of monocultures and lots of soil disturbance.👍

What a shame DEFRA have deemed it necessary to throw money your way to persuade you to be more sensible in your outlook, whilst not rewarding those who never fooked it up in the first place. 🤔

This is the crux of it. Some farms have never been into highly intensive livestock or arable farming. They grew cereals perhaps, maybe even beet or pulses, but it was part of a longer rotation and done in a way that minimised environmental impact.

Now bigger landowners who were probably the descendants of the guys who ripped out every hedge and tree for miles around in the 50s are the ones being paid to put back what they have neglected for nigh on 50 years.
