Certainly not risen, buyers perhaps a bit more picky. Would they have been more Carlisle, etc?
Hard to say Barney has had dearer sales in the previous months than Carlisle. I can remember looking at what you sold and some folks near here and they looked dearer. The weekly sales at Carlisle have a fairly careful bunch of buyers. Saturdays sale would have some very good cattle well turned out and big for age. I took some last year the best made more than on a weekly sale the average ones made a bit less. Don’t think you are far wrong there really

Your ‘nothing special’ cattle look very good to me
Have they dropped a bit?
I was just thinking that. They are good cattle. I dont think they would make much more at Carlisle on a normal Wednesday. They have to be older and bigger to get the heights there.

Had a few store hoggs in at Longtown. I thought the edge had gone off the trade a little, although C.Putt said it was as strong as ever. I had £137 for some easycare x texel things i bought out of Hexham at the end of October. They almost doubled themselves and couldnt have been any more than 35kg.

DW in fine form. Bought a big run of Blackie hoggs off Whitfield Estates @ £90,then a whopping pen of 160(filled the ring) of Swales at £79,then the last pen of 50 or so aswell.

Didnt see many farmer buyers in,just the usual set.

Wigton SQQ cracked £4.

A good commercial show of hoggs selling to the dearest trade to date with the whole sale averaging in excess of £175 with a whole sale average of 394.32p/kg and an SQQ of 406.3ppk. Top today £224 for a 47kg Beltex from S & D Peile, Parkgate Hall and destined for R J Harrison Ltd, King Street, Wigton. Light weight hoggs in short supply to a top of £193 for a 37kg from TA & A Jefferson, Aspatria Hall or 525p/kg for a 36kg Beltex from J M Wharton, Snade. A number of big hoggs in excess of £200 and more hoggs of every class could easily be handled.
