Fibreglass longevity

I was planning on fibreglass coating the walls on my new parlour, following advice on here.

However, having just seen Tom Pemberton’s recent video with the fibreglass flaking off after only a matter of months, I’m starting to wonder if I’ve made the right decision!

I don’t believe he used the well known Welsh firm that most on here have used.

is this an isolated case caused by shoddy workmanship/inadequate surface preparation? Or have others had similar experiences?

That parlour on YouTube is shortly going to look a mess

Bad workmanship I should think.

Properly done (often by a well known Welsh outfit- although I’m not sure they are still on the job?) there is no problem unless a bit cracks and water gets behind it.

I'm not risking it on our new parlour, going to clad with plastic, think it looks far better and tom pemberton paid £8.5k for that mess

Your decision obviously but I would have no hesitation in doing it again
Makes for a cleaner finish plus you can have whatever colour you want

We have fibreglass, been in twenty years, it was very cheap as we bought the materials and did it ourselves, looks as good as new when I clean it.

Not seen his flaking vid but his walls were a right mess before he had them fibreglassed,it would have been better rendered beforehand.

I've just got my son to put Tom's video up of the walls and I would say the walls were not prepared correctly, you can see some joints and not others. Looks a right mess.

Get dragon mouldings, plastic moves and looks rubbish, they were still working late last year for sure.

He didn't let the mortar and brick dry out nor did he render the wall. If you do both those things you will be fine.

No need to render, just flush point and make sure it's dry.

If your going to have it fibreglass you want it smooth to start with,tp’s was a fûçk up.

Begs the question which company was willing to do it on the surface provided.

It wasn’t Dragon Mouldings as Tony himself has commented on the video saying what a poor job it is

Ours is done 20 years and any outside edge has an aluminium angle piece glued or screwed on to protect it. Still ok apart from one or two places I've been too close with the pressure washer

The other way to do it is to cover the walls before the concrete floor is done so it is tucked in. Ours laps the top of the block work so that it is secured by the galvanised former on top.

His problem could have been damp/too cold and blocks to new!

I rarely watch TP’s videos but I’m pretty sure I saw bits of his parlour build & thinking it looked like Stevie Wonder had chucked up the blocks after a heavy all day drinking session. Certainly not the best example of how to do it. Water getting behind fibreglass would be one of the main reasons it goes wrong. We laid the floor after we fibreglassed the walls so it was sealed in. Had a good 20 years out of it before we stopped using the parlour.
Done well its really good, but complete waste of money if not done properly.

I’ve panels in my pit and they didn’t need any fibreglass because they’re smooth as glass anyway.
