Spring bean's....

14 to 18 april 2013
best fields 2 tonne an acre
that late high seed rate produces A higher margin and an earlier crop 80 seed per m 2
late planting also has a lot less weed pressure
thin crops take ages for all the plants to ripen
trouble with varieties now is big seed and high thousand seed weight

2012 planted in mid March into dust were far worse a crop as it rained constantly for 6 weeks in April and May
the pendimethalin hit the crop never used it since on later crops

Without pendimethalin, how do you control broad leafed weeds? Clomazone only does cleavers and you can’t rely on betazone to do anything other than be expensive and end up in the watercourses.

Without proper pe-em herbicide I think I'd sooner drill a cover crop and let the bees at it for the summer. Never worth it otherwise, will create a hideous weed burden for the next crop.

Since 2013 only used bentazone if there are lots of rape charlock don’t grow beans on bad charlock fields

Mid April planted beans with a bit of charlock is not a problem as the pollen beetle destroy any flowers
Here after mid April the are very few blw in any crop in most fields
I have 2 fields with fathen
with beans no nitrogen and high plant pops of beans out compete the nitrogen starved weeds that manage to germinate dry undisturbed soil surface in notill helps
in a wet year knotgrass can be a problem but it germinates after the pre em has run out

Fallowing s/ bean land this spring. At least I know the loss per acre. Can’t be arsed to do loads of work and still be worse off. Maybe a sprinkle a bit of mustard and get the acreage ready early for the autumn. The other areas destined for spring crops may go the same way if things don’t improve over the coming weeks.

Intrigued to see how these Tundras fare, they were drilled mid Jan in frosts, last time I did this in jan ‘20 they didn’t yield that well, around 2.8t/ha from memory but podded too close to the ground
They look a lot better this time and got Kerb on Jan 30th so at least they are nice and clean

Shame defy no longer has an eamu. Anyone trying emerger (aclonifen) my only experience of it is as a BG herbicide in wheat.

Not sure how good aclonifen is on broad leafed weeds. It has been used extensively in potatoes for years. @Spud ?

The reclassification of beans as a major crop has buggered up many EAMUs. The same has happened to oats.

How much is Emerger?

Those look great. Hopefully the season is really kind and you'll get a good crop out of that.

Its better than nowt on varieties with low metribuzin tolerance, but the max rate is a bit lean to do a proper job. Not the best tank mixer from a physical pov

For Godsake just bring back Simazine and state that you can't apply it to the same field any more than once in 4 years and if you don't look after it and it starts appearing in water they'll ban it again.
Yeah and the scandal here is that the water companies effectively lobbied the government agencies to get herbicides banned even if they were relatively easy to remove effectively as it was a cost to them- all the while discharging raw sewage into the rivers because it was too expensive to resolve and their mates at the EA turned a blind eye.
