Oil - genuine vs non genuine

Just asked for a price for some Hytran oil for our old Quadtrac. Nearly £900 for 205 litres.
We use Witham oil for much of our oil requirements and their equivalent is probably 65% of the price (I'm guessing).
What is the TFF collective view on using equivalent, non OM oils?
I appreciate this will probably end up like a 'remapping' or a 'pickup' thread. ie 50% infavour, 50% against

None of the OEM machinery manufacturers have their own oil refineries that anyone is aware of, so all will buy in oil.

As long as the spec is met or exceeded by the equivalent then there should be no problem.

Would still want a reputable brand, like Witham or Morris.

Essentially it's all about spec.

If the spec of the non-OEM oil matches the spec required then use away.

If not, then it's "stick-your-neck-out" time.

Been using morris jdf in most things now. Maxxum 5130 hasnt had any problems over 7 years or so........ your machine is far more valuable and expensive to repair though....

Yes, but they could potentially get an oil blended with an additive package tailor-made to their own requirements.

But as you say, it's all about spec.

I think I'd be going with the genuine for the old girl if it was me. Lot of moving bits in that gearbox...

Yes but it's a valid question. The new hytran is a higher spec (read more expensive) than the old hytran I believe.

Is hytran still used in new CaseIH tractor transmissions? And yet the blue versions have New Holland Ambra..brown coloured oil! Great marketing..of what is just UTTO oil.

Some years ago when we were farming I consulted one of the biggest lubricant suppliers in the country regarding correct fluid for the transmission in our matbro
He came back with there’s 2 types of transmission available for matbro
One transmission requires specific fluid
Which was ours
What I am saying is you need to contact lubricant supplier
I used to work at IH main agent and I asked this guy about hytran fluid
He told me that silkolene made hytran
It was transmission fluid wit dye added

Exol optifarm UTTO is same grade as hytran £449 205l

Have you priced Morris Agrimax HY? Meets Case MS1207/1209 and they even dye it red.

nowt wrong with their oil
ask him about court case with j d
when jd said witham oil was not right , witham asked them to prove it was not jd failed
over 70,000 hours on tractors here . and 500.000 miles on vehicles run on witham
trust them good product and good reps

Someone I know bought 25 litres of Morris hydraulic fluid from a local agricultural engineer, it was less than half price of Morris online sales

The online prices are best ignored, I'm assuming the delivery of one drum makes it expensive.
It's 25 miles to my nearest Morris stockist but they're cheaper for 25 litres than local places are for 20 litres of "own brand" which is a complete unknown

Witham have been very good over the years, and provide 99% of what we need apart from the biogas CHP, the best oil and cheapest for that is PetroCanada Syntron CG40

This is what I would use,Hytran has always been an expensive con.McCormick used to have their own version,HTX it was called but I don’t think you can get that anymore.As long as it meets case MS1207/1209 crack on.

And not just JD.
CNH were taken to task in the European courts in 2016 over misleading owners of CNH machinery as to which specifications to adhere to.

WP’s old quad only ever had Whitam oils in it when I was there. I put a couple of thousand hours on it maybe more. No trans or axle problems

The original Hytran 1207 was a 10w/30 grade. When 1209 was introduced it became a 10w/20 grade ( as a thinner oil causes less drag, so slightly better performance figures ! )
Hytran Ultraction then appeared classed as MAT 3540, and went back to a 10w/30 grade.
Very very few lubricant manufacturers bothered with the 10w/20 grade, they stuck with 10w/30 for the 1209 spec.
