Evolution Farming

The more staff you have, the less gets done. Everyone thinks someone else will sort it.
"Leave it for the next shift cos I'm not in for 2 days after tonight, and I don't care" kind of thinking.
Very very true.

We run 2 sights. It’s not my staffs fault if animals don’t get fed it’s mine. There paid to do a job. People forget stuff it’s human nature but if you want to run multiple units you need eyes and ears everywhere and in today’s modern world there’s no excuse. I’m sat having my lunch on the other unit putting cidrs in heifers and if I look on my phone I can see this

Calves have been bedded and there’s cake in the feed trough for them. If I roll the footage back I’m sure I’ll see someone feeding them there milk. There’s literally no excuse anymore

Which one of Evolution farmings herds has this video come from? I see this months cow management magazine has a write up about their Leicestershire based herd- 1000 cows,10 staff, eldest staff member 28.
Interesting to read it in context with this thread and then read the last paragraph of Roger Evans’ article in the same magazine.
His closing sentence “Owning and caring for animals brings with it responsibilities, and it’s a point of difference that could become increasingly important.”

I don’t think anyone sets out to do a 5hit job of anything but when you got inexperienced, unreliable staff solely responsible for calf rearing etc and get a cocci/crypto breakdown on a large block calving scenario, a milk buyer who judges you on calf loses so loosing in with the .410 isn’t a option you can see how these situations happen.
So if each farm is staffed with inexperienced people there needs a policy change at the top
Brothers boss runs multiple units and employs quite a lot of youngsters but there is always an experienced man at the top who is responsible for the whole unit.Who are these youngsters supposed to learn of otherwise

I hope they come down hard on him.
I know it’s tough at the moment but I find it extremely hypocritical that he can be lecturing the industry at the Oxford farming conference and Ahdb strategic farm on preaching to the rest of us mere mortals on how it should be done while this is going on under his supervision.
It’s just not good enough.

Old farmer once said to be that all too often industry 'leaders' were giving speeches and holding top brass jobs but that their own farms wouldn't stand a second glance. I never knew what he really meant but perhaps your post explains it all.

As I said I am in no position to judge as I don't have the facts.

I hope that those that do make the right calls for the industry as a whole.

And I take my hat off to @Johnsmith2024 for what he has done.

As I said on the environment thread as farmers we must take more responsibility for policing our fellow farmers that are at risk of letting our whole industry down.

We also need to have the bodies that matter to then deal with it appropriately.

But trial by social media will never end up with a good outcome. However it is looking that exposure of non compliance by social media is unfortunately proving to be the only way to get people to take things seriously

This is the reality of the situation. With the rise of everyone has a camera-itis and social media a single bad incident affects you all, even if you're a non-Arla garden member or simply bottle and sell your own milk- anything adverse will be seized on by animal rights nutters and used against you anyway. The consumer doesn't want to see this sort of carry on and neither do farmers.
