Forgotten names

There was "Osmond's" from Grimsby - are they still going ? Sold patent animal medicines , I remember their after calving pessary , like a greenish soap mortar round. Black draughts , brown draughts for "hoven or bloat " Then there was Ellimans embrocation , that was a cure-all for sure , whatever was wrong, a good rub with Ellimans would at least help if not cure . Also Marginsons from Preston , brothers I think with a vet practice , who did a good trade in patents . One brother lectured vet science at Hutton , sound practical chap too but who had a bit of a thing against nitrogen on grass , said it grew "barsteward protein " whatever that was . Another product before intensive battery egg production was "Ovum" a red spice mixture to be added to feed . They encouraged customers to write in with their experience of uplifted egg production with said Ovum . Some got a bit over enthusiastic and reported over 2 eggs / day / hen ! Still got rewarded with a free Ovum pack . All gone now perhaps , but memories from an enforced lay-off . I have som Ellimans "Royal" embrocation illustrations somewhere that I'll post if I can find them .

http://www.osmonds.co.uk/ Yes Osmond's are still alive!

Great grandad used to peddle a medicine called "Curechiline- cures all cattle diseases." He took it round the shows on commission, but I think they tested all these medicines in the end and found this one was just peppermint and water. :)

Newcomer to the forum, latecomer to this thread,so I offer my six pen'orth of responses in alphabetical rather than chronological order. 1.Bale Humping(first job when I left school-Summer of '76 !!) Farmer strongly believed that you had to talk nicely to the Lister elevator or it would not start.2.Facemasks - the gauze pads with the alloy faceplate,Good O'le Boy wore one,but made a hole in it for his fag :) 3.Gladstone,James - a collection of his columns from Big Farm Weekly were published in a book - "Up Country with James Gladstone".4.Howard was taken on by Dowdeswell in happier days. 5.Kidd straw chopper - getting it started - many shear bolts,or even better,a quarter twist of the box-section pto shaft and finally- 6.Ripvator forklift - tyres 120lb,blown tyre = big bang and buckled wheelrim. So many memories, names gone but Not Forgotten.,

I have grandad's Albion horse mower in the shed, and Dad converted it to tow with their Fordson in 1939 using a "Lainchbury tractor Converter" drawbar. Dad said that he used it to mow the airfield during the war, and during the one and only bombing raid, it was parked out on the field and the tractor was the only casualty.

Not strictly agri. but whatever happened to the big metal enamel signs that were on every railway station platform for " MAZAWATTEE TEA" Was there ever such a tea ? I certainly never saw any such , and I'll have drunk as much tea , if not more than most on here !

Page Feeds at Ruswarp, though I think there main base was at Tadcaster. I remember being in there mill at Ruswarp in the early 80s when they were developing Wagg dog food and thinking " that will never catch on". How wrong I was. You can get Wagg in supermarkets, don't know where it's made, but Page Feeds are long gone.

Burgess Feeds of Thornton Le Dale

Hutchinsons Massey dealers of Helmsley and Malton.

Parishes Leyland dealers of Scarborough.

Wagg is at Ripon iirc

Bushels of York (Ford dealers)
Goughs of Hunsingore MF dealers
Ralph Yates (still very much going selling fork andles, but long since ceased selling farm machinery)

It's a little sobering when you think back on the tractor dealers that have gone over the years, I spent most of my childhood and early working years near to Stratford on Avon. Western Farm Implements were the main Massey Ferguson dealers, Savilles on the Birmingham Road used to be the International and David Brown dealers for the area. Outside Stratford was the Renault dealers Lower Quinton Garages, funny how life follows you round as I did some work for a bloke in Hereford driving a Nectra sold by the Lockwood brothers many years before.
West Midland Farmers at Beoley used to sell kit as well before they were taken over by Countrywide. Also dotted around the area were a Same dealer at Ettington and Southam Agricultural Services began with selling Fendt and the main dealer for Ford, still going now, was Murleys in Warwick.
Things were going downhill when the livestock market was closed down.
