As nearly all their cars have it I assumed the ranger would be also on button, steering lock when engine off is just VERY stiff on mine... think its electric steering though.

In fact, as yet, only a minority of new cars, probably around 30% of them, are fitted with keyless entry and start using proximity keys/dongles/remotes. It is often limited to higher trim levels.
I have yet to see a single car that does not have a steering lock. I haven't seen your though, so its not impossible.
I have three cars currently with electric steering and proximity keys plus the old Panda also had electric steering but not a proximity key. They all have steering locks. The ones with proximity keys and start-stop don't lock the steering when the engine stops and indeed some of the electric steerings continue to work while the ignition is on and, if it has shut down due to the auto-stop, turning the wheels starts the engine.

My car is a Kuga, the doors have to be unlocked normally by using the right button, (or hidden key thing in door if battery is flat) the place where you would put a key in the ignition is totally blanked out with the trim. the car will start with the key in or very close to the car, if its left on the garage wall and goes out of range it warns you but does not stop until you stop it or does an auto stop in traffic jam... it then will not restart without walking back to the Garage wall to fetch key!
