Time wise yes, they'd have eaten a lot less silage. But trade still flying here. Limited supply of heifers for sale from what I see. Making a ransom if you ask me. I certainly wouldn't like to be paying it. Winter bonus means guys must be holding onto heifers, despite the looming reality of silage supply. Mind you, TB continues to swallow up lots of cattle.
Best still good money over here, best just over £2k for fresh heifers at our local mart yesterday, but 2nd quality definitely less money alot of smaller frailer heifers £1000-£1200

A 15 litre cow on the cull list. 2 months milk @ 36 ppl is 324. Minus feed costs approx 50/month leaving 224. Cull the cow get 400 - 500, save 2-2.5 ton silage @ 40?/t= 80 -100. Sell sell sell. Drink a beer.

Well said. It seems entirely obvious that our processors should price milk properly on solids to discourage thin milk. It's costing us money in extra transport and processing costs. Of course they've all thought about it and had the discussions in the various board rooms, but it seems it's a move none has yet volunteered to make first. It won't be popular with high volume Holstein producers. I think it's really important that our processors begin the process of preparing producers for the change, rather than landing it suddenly some day when a company makes the first move. Many producers have already been working towards it, and frankly it's well past time the industry got on with it.

are you not paid for solids ?
It's kinda like the global response to climate change. Everyone (well almost!) gets that it's a wise thing to do, however, nobody is going to do anything until everybody else does something. No processor wants to lose the high volume, level supply, intensive producers and they're the ones who'll be most negatively impacted. All the while, the average yield of the Northern Irish cow continues to creep upwards.

It's mad how the more water we send the more we get paid. More volume to transport, additional costs to dry/reduce for manufacturing. Surely it's in processors favour to have higher solids, less water. Its not as if we've a massive liquid milk market in NI.

And yet none of our processors seem interested!!
