When I was a child we had to store some grain at a larger neighbours store. It was never weighed in and I have since heard rumours that sometimes the owner wasnt too fusy about which store his own grain sales came out of...

I always thought one of the benefits of storing grain was the leftover bit at back of shed after it was all loaded out.

Bit at the back, bit a the front, bit at the middle, bit at the top and a bit from the bottom.....

£2.50 in and out £1 a month storage. Plus weighs and any cleaning or drying on top.

Intervention stores used to have a 5% shrinkage allowance. Nice little earner if the store was yours!

I think the tolerances are much smaller now. IIRC @Clive is on 0.5% for the merchants renting his space.

Fiddling the weights and admix was commonplace as well. I speak from experience.

we were allowed 0,2% by our merchant customers and to be honest that wasnt far off but was scary tight some years (we were responsible for the shortfall if there was one !) - we did get it increased to 0.25% in the last year or so we ran storage which aided sleep at night !

anyone working on more is on a right tidy fiddle I promise you !
