The sand won’t ever get between the joints. There’s a right way and a wrong way. One thing worse that building a horse arena is building the fugging thing twice.
If you are on impermeable subsoil, or cut into a natural spring you need something to take the water away. The glue stops silica sand getting between the joins down to your drains, it’s got nothing to do with the horse pushing through. Well compacted silica sand will hold up a galloping Clydesdale.
Silica sand is easily compacted when wet, the trick is keeping it riding firm when in extreme dry conditions which is why we use various additives to the sand. I never said we didn’t use drainage we have our own system which is much simpler and just as effective as a herringbone system we do have the highest rainfall in the UK.
We average 15-20 arenas per year and aways happy to advise the self builders.
