Diet feeder loaded with tractor loader

The last Keenan I bought I told them to leave off the bale handler as the banging would test my patience. I'm mostly mixing pit silage, meal and chopped beet so mixing times doesn't be much longer than 5/10 minutes per load. A couple of years ago I had to buy a go of bales to stretch my silage and I had to break them out before loading and then leave it mixing 45 minutes to chop. The Keenan does my job it's not a patch on any make of a tub feeder.

If your just mixing meal ration or a precision chop pit of grass or maize the Paddle type are very good. Years back the Keenan had a good reputation for mix quality in that kind of material over and above many others.

Generally I find that asking the farming forum for advice is a pretty good place to start fact finding :) Alternatively, you speak to a dealer and they have a tendency to forget to mention the downsides

Well it can be a good place to ask but some threads turn into piles of crap like the current jd valtra one

I had two wettish second cut bales in our keenan, about a ton each the other day and they were ready to feed in about ten minutes. One dry bale about 500 kg tonight took half an hour🙄

Any debate involving makes of machinery or breeds of livestock generally require popcorn

Makes more sense to have blades in the baler than burn diesel for ages every day trying to chop it up in a mixer ;)

It does the job the finest for the mixs I'm feeding once it's fairly short.

This was haylage so it was fairly high dm. I used to fill it up and leave it mixing and then I would go in and have the breakfast.

I haven't got enough reason to justify changing for anything else, just pointing out what to expect from one. They're built strong, simple and cheap to maintain and fix but not perfect for someone feeding a lot of stock with bales. When we bought ours we were mostly pit with some bales and now all bales so change the way I plan feeding. Leave it mix while throwing some straw round or making some phone calls etc

This is only 2.5m high. I can see over the top sitting in the tractor.

I had the Keenan rep out there. I have to say I was impressed with the whole digital connectivity of the system - means I can make sure that the stock are always getting the right mix whether I feed them or someone else does. Also the support might be useful with the subsidies coming in for those growing their own proteins - I will probably try to avail of these in my mixes and some advice wouldn't hurt. He assured me that the newer systems are better with bales and actually didn't recommend the bale cradle for me. I said I wanted to see one working with bales on farm and he said he could organise this - might be after lockdown though. I haven't ruled out a tub, but I certainly haven't ruled out a Keenan either.

i think you’ve just discovered the thing Keenan are best at & make them really stand out from the crowd...the sales patter
Oh they are full of that right enough , but a wise man see a through that , they make a really simple low maintenance strong machine that gives many years service , mine has done eleven years and in October I re lined it myself for low hundreds of pounds and I intend to get at least , at least another 11 years service and hope for lot more, damn good machines but Keenan spoil the job with all that high pressure sales pish .

I'm well noted for my ability to entertain such things without actually getting sucked in. I believe it's called....being tight? Don't worry, I'll be looking a trioliet demo too - primarily because I have a dealer for them less than a mile away from me and they have a good name.

The guy seems sound enough - high pressure sales severely pisses me off so he would get his marching orders very quickly if he started that carry on.

For those with experience of Keenans - something that I hadn't thought of until now - how well does it mix front to back? In other words, if I tipped a load of barley at the front of the machine, would the majority of the barley stay at the front, thereby affecting the consistency of the feed out? I expect the auger system would help reduce this but I can't see how it would create a fully consistent mix.

in fairness to the keenan, it produces a well mixed 'fluffy' load, that's the problem, the machine doesn't hold enough for many farmers. A tub mixer, makes a tighter mix, and more per load.
