Good solid trade:)

Lambs that are fine for deadweight are always considered to lean in the live ring, this makes no sense to me as the market lambs will still be knocked on the head the next day but if a farmer had sent the over fleshed lambs direct themselves they would have come back too fat!..

On the ewe, the saying is : you can buy cheap and sell dear/cheap but you cannot buy dear and sell cheap. ( and she was certainly cheap enough when you bought her ).
Best bit is I got more ewes like her brought at that kinda of price. Has long the trade holds

The butcher I supply has said if they get over £5 he can’t make it pay, same with boxed lamb. By the time you add the killing and cutting on your looking at £150 which is more than most folk will pay

We went from £4.80 to £5.50 and this week £5.75 so with killing charges on a 20kg carcase they are around £6.50 per kg.
The London market will stand this price but sales are down around 50%.
Fortunately the export is underpinning the price and as long as no more sheep come on the market than at present then the price won't fall.

They’ve paid more before though, so I can’t really understand them saying it’s too dear.

I do think there’s too many people selling lamb boxes and not realising what it’s actually costing.
Quite a few doing it round here now.not sure where they all get the customers.were not in a populated area compared to you boys down south

I am afraid the retail price does make a difference to the amount that is sold. Although admittedly you don't sell more on a falling market.
The issue at present in Butchers shops is that they have to make a profit as well as the producer and they are pushing pork at the moment.

They can sell pork at £1.50 per lb and double their money. They cant sell lamb and do that, in fact they are lucky if they can add more than 10%. Beef they are doing around 30% plus.

When are you thinking is the time to cash them?
Between now and when the price falls!

I am fairly confident the price will remain where it is until mid March for anything that is not too heavy or too fat.
I wouldn't be waiting to make a fortune on those heavy hoggets unless pubs and restaurants will be open for Easter across europe.

The price at present is better than any of us anticipated at the moment and stores are probably too dear, but who knows.

Will pubs and restaurants make much difference to the job? They are closed now and it’s higher than ever?

Pork job is on the floor currently so unless lamb prices end up the same the butchers you supply will still buy/push the pork.

Not our problem if butchers make a profit or not...

When does a butcher say when lamb prices are on the floor : I MUST pay more so the farmer makes a profit.......................................................................

You need to wake up Frank: Meat prices are set by supply and demand, supply is tight currently and demand is very high...

Thou im sure you would love for sheep prices to be on the floor like the pig job as it will further your argument that Brexit should never have happened...

Personally I don't get the whole its too dear to sell rubbish, people buy champagne when its next to asti , they buy Stella when its next to carlsberg, heinz over own brand stuff, audi over skoda
Stop feeling guilty about making a couple of quid lads
Yes but it’s volume that’s the key, Lamb is largely eaten by the older generation and muslims neither are in the high earner champagne drinking bracket. Price has a major influence on consumption be a bigger cue outside Gregg’s than the Butchers round here sadly

The heavy sheep are not selling at a premium for the price per dead kg. Butchers don't mind taking them because they are less than standards and mediums when hung up, but they are prepared to do the work to cut them.
The supermarkets here and abroad want a standard product to fit in the packaging.
