UK Public now Eating Significantly Less Meat

The BBC in full flow this morning. The agenda is writ large

Something doesn't stack up here.

We know the population of the UK has increased by at least 10%.

Looking through the report it's a "Per Capita" amount .. which looking at it in detail is mainly influenced by immigrants from none UK cultures. Looks as though the total amount of meat consumption remains pretty much the same, maybe a bit less as other sources of protein have arrived. The main reduction is from other cultures.

Misleading headline IMHO.

"Findings
From 2008 to 2019, average meat consumption per capita per day decreased from 103·7 g (SE 2·3) to 86·3 g (2·9) per day (ptrend<0·0001), including an absolute reduction in red-meat consumption of 13·7 g (ptrend<0·0001), an absolute reduction in processed meat consumption of 7·0 g (ptrend<0·0001), and a 3·2 g increase (ptrend=0·0027) in white-meat consumption. Collectively, these changes were associated with a significant reduction in all six environmental indicators over the whole period. The two middle birth-year groups (people born in 1960–79 and 1980–99) and White individuals were the highest meat consumers. Meat intake increased over time among people born after 1999, was unchanged among Asian and Asian British populations, and decreased in all other population subgroups. We found no difference in intake with gender or household income."

Indeed , whereas in the real world meat sales are booming .

You cannot even trust the data they collated. The figures are "Estimated", so there is going to be a significant margin of error probably in the order of at least 10%.

"Dietary-data collection and processing
Dietary data were collected using consecutive, 4 day, estimated unweighed food diaries, with all days of the week equally represented. Meat consumption was based on disaggregated meat data that excluded all non-meat components of composite meat dishes and products."

The bit that interested me was to do with how they assessed ready meals and such. If people are eating more ready meals (a fair assumption I'd have thought?) the meat content of these isn't that great is it? Pretty small in a lot of cases. That alone could result in a reduction to some degree.

Then again, the whole study is a bit of a joke anyway so who cares.

28% of those involved in the survey were less than 10 years old.

A ready meal will have a meat content which is already cooked. The meat will weigh less compared to fresh ingredients in the same meal. Plenty of margin to sway the statistics which ever way you want.

Bury your heads in the sand at your peril , I`d wager that in 25 years meat will be a very small part of Western diets , your teenage kids will be growing mainly veg ,legumes and bio fuel crops when they are in their forties.

We have to care because this torrent of propaganda will only increase and we are going to have to fight for our way of life - all of us collectively.

Protein is required to have a large brain, calcium for good teeth and bones. My sister who is vegan doesn't allow her child to go veggy .. because he'd end up thick with a small brain and bad teeth.

He regularly drinks cream and eats meat.

As a teacher she knows what's the best diet to give a healthy future .. and it isnt' eating veggy.

It`s not me you have to convince , as for teachers knowing better you`ll find a large percentage of them are veggie and socialists.

In the small print is that people are eating more white meat (as it’s cheaper) and less red. So basically no change in the trend seen since 1960.
Population has grown though so demand is still strong.
Yup.

I almost get bored of saying it, but once again: 80% of the meat we eat is pig and poultry, 50% of the UK consumption of meat is chicken alone.
