We have a large pond which has some 60 ducks in it - on one side the pond is bordered by a secure hen run....on the other it borders on to grassland which has a 4 foot fence around it, with a three wire electric fence secured on 45 degree brackets at the top.
This morning we found the ducks insisted on staying up on the grassland instead of coming, as is usual, for their voracious morning feed on the pond - something had spooked them. We then discovered the electric fence was in a tangle, and one of the brackets had been bent upwards from 45 degree to almost vertical. At least three ducks are missing, but with no evidence of feathers or a fight.
This raises a few questions:
If they have been attacked, why didn't they take flight to the pond, and stay there where it is safest?
Has anyone a possible explanation for how the bracket holding the electric fence wire got bent upwards? What sort of predator would have the weight to do that it if was tangled in the wire?
Has anyone had a similar experience?
Many thanks
Brett
