And this is why no youngsters will make it into farming unless they are handed a farm from family.
The government are so brain dead when it comes to sustainable food production it’s unreal. They deserve everything they get
It’s a disgrace, ill thought out policy once again. These big estates will just take it all back. Death duties sorted them out once upon a time, can’t see it happening again

Post Brexit Britain means moving away from cheap labour to a high efficiency economy where businesses invest in technology more than labour. We are in the painful period of adjustment which is why the recent jobs show were more vacancies than unemployed. Covid has concentrated peoples minds and I know 2 businesses that are now doing more business with less than half their pre Brexit staff.

Dairy, Arable and poultry have been able to invest and improve greatly. Pigs have been squeezed and unfortunately beef and sheep have nowhere to run in this brave new world.
These schemes taking some of this hard working ground out of production probably is only speeding up a process that is going to happen anyway. Obviously some ground will taken out that shouldn’t but that’s the nature of these things.

Going to be some hard decisions coming up and I include myself in that.

When was this cheap labour available?? I can’t remember any. When I started my business my staff were better paid than I was and someone from the government told me what I had to pay

Poultry doesn’t look that great. The trouble with making things less labour intensive is it leads to overproduction.

That will do unemployment the world of good…
Exactly. A growing population in the country exacerbated by immigration, and technology/minimum wage enabling/forcing business to employ less people, equals more unemployed and less working to pay for it, combined with big business escaping their share of taxation by whatever means they can. It can only go one way, but as with everything as long as the inevitable isn’t in the current 5 year term of Government they don’t care, just keep kicking the can down the road with sound bytes and borrowing more. I think the end is nigh though now, COVID has kicked the can into a dead end

Pigs are a classic example , you cant make money out of pigs anymore but the largest slaughter house kills so many a day …. The head bummer is on 250k a year ! But the producers are going bust ! It fikimg stinks
It was a pig farmer who told me his relative is on 250k a year running slaughthouse 9-5 5 days week , mean while hes grafting 7 days and going
bankrupt, im sure he had a tear in his eye and walked away mid sentence ….
