Beef / Lamb & Pig Price Tracker

Just been talking to a friend tonight in Tesco carpark, saying there landlord wants more than a quarter of the farm back to plant trees on,about 250 acres. Not hill land but good permanent pasture.Offering them 6 x back years rent, about £20K.They are not the only ones either, the neighbouring farms the same.Landlord wants about 1400 acres in one block.
Yes that’s a deal I was told about a few years ago the money looks attractive at first but when you look more closely it’s not so good. Scottish woodland are offering a lump sum then annual payment. Land agent and bank managers dream but they forget about the fact they only pay if it meets their specification of trees at a certain time after planting otherwise you are left with the planting costs no way back really. A few thousand per acre then an annual payment minus planting costs.
Might help those of us who carry on with the livestock long term possibly
Agents and bankers don’t include the calculation that the land is done for afterwards and longer term profit usually is not as much but the quick cash is always the selling point especially on the area you are talking about

If the abattoirs are wanting to cut costs it will be the price they pay for our product that will decrease not there profits! Any one who thinks that the price we receive for our lamb is gonna go up just because our costs have gone up is sadly deluded!! I hope I’m wrong but I fear I’m not, 🤷‍♂️

It’s already happened what you said here. Abattoirs are experiencing very high costs and passing that on in lower purchase values for us

Late store sheep sales sell many in ones and it’s painful. Some of the lots look like they would match up too
HA!!! You want too see some of those west coast sales at the START of the season! I filled a card year before last and hadn’t bought a bunch bigger than 4!! Thankfully a couple of estates came in late with a couple of 100+ pens and I managed too make a semi decent load up!!
