May is as hard a month as lambing almost, it usually takes us till about 5th june before we feel as though weve caught up, cattle out, lambs dosed etc.
Your not wrong there Iv been up at 6 and not got into bed until gone midnight for the last 3 weeks 🤦‍♂️ Always something needs bloody doing feel like I pack my prattley away and put it back out again for fun these days 😂 but just dropped the tail board on the last load of weaned ewes into a 50 acre field 164 ewes survived culling out of 274 😅 50 replacement ewe lambs joined them… then all lambs too 1 place now, I’ll set the prattley up on that block of land next week with the weigh crate and it can stay there until probably about late July 😎

Genuinely don’t know how you lads do it! June and July are our quiet months, just deal with all our own sheep and cattle. I’ll go contacting for the council 4 days a week starting next week but it sure as hell is easier earned money than shearing. Had another lot in for doses/vaccine this afternoon. Ewes were fit so managed too rattle off 40 in an hour and a half wrapping and penning myself. Absolutely chuffed at that! For the last 3 years I’ve been doing well too shear 5 in a row!

I want to know how you do what you do

I have no kids, don't like watching tv and only need 4 hours sleep to function, so might as well be at work trying to earn (or save) a shilling.
You clearly work very hard and presumably are of an age that enables you to do it.
A bit of advice, if the girlfriend is a keeper then look after her and don’t just assume she is happy with you working all hours.
We can all laugh and joke about our partners but behind most successfull farm businesses there is a good woman either working along side you, at home running the house or working off farm contributing to the business. Most of us and I include myself would not be where we are without that help along the way.

Yes that’s very true.

This is what I can’t understand. They say all farming is a long way from being carbon neutral but there’s a lot of interest in our land for the value of commercial carbon credits to sell on in the future
Exactly this, we have the asset they all want, nobody should sign up to such schemes but I’m afraid they will. I bet nobody has ever made their fortune out of the Angus scheme and other such things.

Be great full you only do it 4 year's.... could mess a lot more days up
Believe me I’m very grateful. I have every sympathy for you guys down south. I genuinely don’t know if I had to test everything on a regular basis that I’d be able to keep cattle. It’s just not healthy for the owner or the cattle to be running in calf cows or cows with little calves through the handling system frequently

Absolutely ...a good one is worth looking after ( as long as she goes shopping on her own).

Have said this before ....first misses was a drain on the farm ......second one is an asset to the farm !!

Getting them back in on a hot summers day just for a test is a nightmare. Most of ours are 'off farm' so it means setting up in various fields .
We are hoping that we've now worked it that our next 6 mths test will be when the most of them are coming back home !
We have also worked it that all the stores that we envisage selling in the Autumn are now on one holding number and will be the first batch to be done .
