farming knowledge gone.

Modern cars don't have a spare wheel, so knowing how to put a spare wheel on is just taking up brain space ,
How many people who can fit a wheel find themselves struggling to do do other things due to their brain being full up?

I'd like to learn play the piano but I can't, because my ability to change a wheel is denying me thr ability 🤦🏻‍♂️

Changing a flat tyre on a car requires about the same level of intelligence as wiping ones arse, but I guess the modern generation probably struggles with that too.🙄

l can change a flat tyre in my car, but only if it had one, it doesn't, but the 'new' way, means l have to buy a new tyre, after the 'cure'.

used to help a mate, by going beating for him, big posh shoot, anyway 1 pompous git, had a flat, in the woods, so, we had to help, his spare, on his fancy new truck, resembled a bicycle wheel, we laughed, the other guns laughed, he gave mate £1, to split among those who had changed his wheel, he didn't come so much after that, nor was he missed.

Some of the most successful farmers I know had full control of their business at a young age, often because they lost their father at a young age. Perhaps some others who lost their father early on mismanaged the inheritance and disappeared into obscurity, I don’t know.
What I do know is that the older generation frequently stifles the energy and dynamism of youth, thinking they know better, when in fact their ideas and methods are outdated, or even obsolete.
The energy and entrepreneurship of young people is the lifeblood for any industry.

You forgot one major issue.
The young guy who gets control early due to death doesnt have to pay for fathers upkeep for forty plus years. Two houses, two cars , world cruises etc etc etc
Harsh to say it but true.
New ideas plus less cost = success

Maybe, but my Dad always has pulled his weight workwise. He has been a great support to me and let me take the business in the direction I wanted to go. I have been one of the lucky ones😉😁

Would be interesting to cross check this thread against the one where plenty posters couldn’t download a simple spreadsheet, fill in a few boxes and send it on by email. That’s far easier than changing a tyre and yet plenty seemed to not manage.

It might be for you but I for one couldn’t do it . Change a wheel no problem even change a tyre no problem. It all goes back to knowledge transfer and I’ve never had that knowledge transferred.

Probably even more important than that knowledge is the ability to work things out and to solve problems. I regularly thank my parents for my schooling in simple things like physics. All very well learning lots of facts at dad's knee but nothing beats a basic education in how things work followed up by a wide experience of how it works in practice. I've known a lot of clever people who could pass exams but not solve a simple problem involving logic. The one thing farming teaches is how to be resourceful. I often wonder how much better a farmer would fare on one of those TV adventure programmes rather than the chosen "expert".

The human brain works in different ways in different individuals. I once bought an expensive piece of electronic apparatus for pennies that was described as 'non working'. It took a while but I soon realised it was made in Japan where to turn ON a switch you click it upwards whereas in the west, ON is down! Realising how to click saved me several hundred pounds! The Japanese don't think as we do...not everyone does. And I definitely do not think the same way as Highland Mule! :)
