Is there any age limitations or gross weight limits regarding who can use a dolly and artic trailer?
My son is 18 with a full car license and just wanted to be sure before straw carting.
Thanks

You seriously want a 18 year old to drive that, ffs
Why wouldn’t you? Age is irrelevant. Ability to complete the task safely and proficiently are more important. Have you come into contact with some of the idiots that have just been encouraged into lorry driving but can’t back an artic to save their life but are far far older than 18.

Just make sure the dolly hitch is bolted or welded shut if not it’s classed as 2 trailers and the second cannot then be loaded
silly question but looking for a serious answer: if the dolly was mechanically secured to the tractor would it still be classed as two trailers if an artic trailer was hitched?

well the post said making sure the dolly hitch was either bolted or welded shut. I can bolt the pin of my drawbar on the tractor so would that be similar?
It’s the handle on the dolly to release the trailer that has to be bolted. If they are able to be separated, then they’re classed as two trailers.
I seem to remember that there may also be a regulation that if the trailer has been through MOT inspections, this doesn’t stop just because it’s now in agri use. Not heard of anyone being pulled for that though.

Pulled hundreds of loads of straw and 40ft trailers on dolly’s back when I was 16/18
small bales aswell
Never caused any grief police and traffic wasn’t as bad back then
Was a local pig farm they had a fleet of 135s and single axle attic trailers leading straw
Most accidents are down to drivers
