Just picked a random year before the world went mad or looked like it was. Pick any year you want that didnt have a drought or flood and compare. Looks like the dairy and corn boys having it far easier now than the beef and sheep men by a country mile. Milk has doubled and corn has more than doubled, beef should be 640ppk and we should still be moaning by the looks!!
One of the big differences is you can farm sheep
with little machinery or fixed infrastructure. The machinery costs ,depreciation and repairs in arable are astronomical and contractors have also put their
rates up substantially lately .

Maybe but beef farmings no different, are the arable men any better off for always buying the biggest and most expensive kit available and then crying about a corn price that has more than doubled in 6 yrs

There is a concerted effort to lower the price of grains, by exaggerating the effect of Ukrainian exports that may or may ot happen, and by suppressing the mostly negative harvest expectations around the world.
Only farmers want grain to be a price that reflects the costs and risks of growing it.

I have a shipping tracker app on my phone (like flight radar for boats). .......... not a lot going on in the Black Sea !

How many sheep do you farm @lloyd ?

Yes machinery costs are high for arable farmers but then again sheep farmers have many costs that arable farmers do not and these costs have risen as much if not more than machinery prices have to arable farmers.

Sheep farmers need sheds/ races/ good fences/ gates / road legal livestock trailer/ truck/ quad or tractor to get around the sheep, reseeds/ hard feed/ catch crops/ meds/ a very good farm dog and so the long list goes on yet according to all these things are not needed by sheep farmers...

That's my business but I can tell you I've spent over 40k on livestock fences and about the same on livestock handling equipment last 3 or 4 years.
Has no one told you about the substantial grants available. :X3:
IF you think a sheep shed costs the same as a grain store or quad bike
as much as a combine you need to get out more or give corn growing a try.

So you do not actually farm sheep but are an expert on sheep production and costs??

Yep i know about the grants and they fall far short of the costs per meter for livestock fencing in 2022 given that the rates have not increased since 2012 but material let alone labour costs have doubled in that time!

A sheep shed will cost as much if not more than a grain store!

I grow corn and know full well the costs of growing corn and the profit margins on growing grain will blow out of the water and some the profit margins of farming sheep in 2022!

Why would I spend so much on sheep fencing if I didn't keep sheep.:banghead:
I think I'm starting to see why parts of the SW are classified as severely disadvantaged. 😂
