Land Owners - Deer Culling

That's what my mate gets paid by the butcher.

He often gets up at 4am this time of year to go stalking, half the time comes home with nothing and has his chiller and cutting room to pay for (including local authority accreditation). If he shoots in an evening he can then be skinning & gutting till midnight.

Nobody is going to give venison away for free, even if their permission is free.

(But I appreciate your lad was in a hole, sounds like he needs more chiller/freezer space)
That’s it I don’t mind paying for one, I’ve since given a different lad £40 for a big buck, it was more the fact this lad was in a pickle and it’s not everyone can take a whole deer in it’s skin and sort it, I maybe shoot a 1000 pigeons a year and if you say two carts to every one that’s £600 a year and I give the surplus away rather than waste them, don’t get me wrong I enjoy shooting them and I’m grateful I’m able to go

I sell wild venison to the game dealer. Last time I did was in March and the price was £2.20/kg for Roe and £1.50/ for Red. Not sure what the market is at the moment, it is very dependent on the restaurant trade and does fluctuate a lot.

It’s the best of meat, and it costs me the price of a bullet and usually a very pleasant morning or evening out with the rifle.

Pigeon breast is one of my favourite dishes. Sliced thinly and done with bacon for breakfast. (y)

Where did they end up? Sold into parks or petfood?

I thought if they were penned in and fed hay by hand for a couple of weeks they would become tame enough to handle and sort bucks/does/fawns?

(obviously ignoring the legalities of TB and selling wild animals)

Fair enough someone who is doing it for there own reward. But someone who is culling for someone surely gets paid for there work and the carcase is then surplus. Charging for it when really it's a waste product is odd. I would think giving it away or for a small fee would be right.

They are a massive problem here, I’d be in favour of a cull
Our stalkers are struggling to dispose of the carcasses as the Game dealers are full of them
Nearly 200 shot here this year over 3000 acres and we still have numbers like this
Nationally the Deer population is the highest it’s ever been

If you’re struggling to get rid of carcasses I can highly recommend the Facebook group. Giving up the game. It can be sold on here within the food handling conditions but can also be given away for free to people to sort themselves. Another option I use is a local wildlife park or zoo. You may not get top bucks but the carcasses won’t be wasted.

Whoever is shooting them needs to give them, foc, to farm shops on the basis that it is sold at a pre-agreed price. Massive PR opportunity to get folks eating local.
As I’ve just posted on another comment. I deal with a Facebook group called giving up the game. Well worth a look for passing on carcasses to people who may not have had game before

Here in Lincolnshire we are coming across more deer than I have ever seen in my 40 years of shooting. Muntjac are spreading like wild fire. As people have said they are laying on roadsides after being hit by cars. Untold damage to the flimsy plastic cars of today. I cannot remember a time recently when I’ve been to my local farms and not seen roe deer walking through the fields and crops. Just recently my sone has got a job farming near us. I have been doing vermin shooting for many farms for many years mainly rabbit fox and hares we were invited to fox on the farm where my son works and went out with the lamp only to be greeted by a herd of 40 fallow deer. The damage they are doing to the crops is relentless. I have worked with my farms and am now in the proses of reducing the number of deer but as I said 40 fallow. Reduce that by 10 in a season you’re still going to have an increasing heard size. It tough on the small farms so yes we need to reduce numbers. Not to eradicate as I’m sure every farmer out there loves to ride around in his tractor enjoying the wildlife. As for problems with numbers of carcasses well the dealers need to start dealing with us as a sustainable food source and not some idiots. Let’s be honest I’ve heard of dealers giving £5 for a muntjac. I personally don’t deal with them. I’m a member of a Facebook group called “giving up the game”. And it’s exactly what it says. I also prep my own game and give it to friends and family. It’s brilliant how many people new to game will take it off you but it’s getting eaten. That’s the important part. I also have a local wildlife park who take my surplus game for there tigers And lions. I don’t ask for much but it covers ammo and fuel. Its a hobby to me not a buisness but even the big guys and syndicates can join in and get this wonderful tastey product to people than need it. It’s a win win
