If I remember correctly, an annual cull of about 30% is needed to maintain a healthy deer population with the culling done at all ages, but I am sure someone will correct me if I've remembered that wrongly. That advice would have come from Dick Balharry, head of the old Nature Conservancy for Scotland. Considering the demand for stalking from overseas visitors, something is going badly wrong somewhere.

Nah there will never be that number shot in Thetford. 3000 at a push.

Any ideas why there are Red Deer in Norfolk?

Descendants of outliers from the Norwich Staghounds?
Reds are native and would have covered the whole of the UK at one time, they were pushed back to the more remote corners but are now back on the offensive. I don't think they ever left Norfolk, but when they planted Thetford Forest in the early 20th century, that, along with the neighbouring arable farmland gave them a perfect habitat. The same has happened up here in Scotland as forest cover has expanded, so has the red deer range.

They are a massive problem here, I’d be in favour of a cull
Our stalkers are struggling to dispose of the carcasses as the Game dealers are full of them
Nearly 200 shot here this year over 3000 acres and we still have numbers like this
Nationally the Deer population is the highest it’s ever been

I've often wondered if these big herds of fallow could be herded/baited into a big high fenced pen and enclosed?

Are they as tame as they look?

I dread to think what 200 fallow eat in a week.

Sod the bolt action. You're going to have to go belt fed to deal with that number :sneaky:

Roger Woods, communications manager for the Forestry Commission, said: “This has been a long term issue - almost ever since the forest was created in the 1920s. But due to legislation, there is nothing we can do. We can only cull at certain times of the year and in certain numbers.

“We do have a large population of deer within the 60,000 acres of Thetford Forest. There are at least 12,000 deer which have heavy breeding patterns. Deer are a big issue in the forest and we have to cull about 3,000 a year.”

I think they could, they are used to people

Once corralled i would think something like an AR 15 might be appropriate??

That's the bit that intrigues me. Where is all the venison from a long overdue national cull to go ?

Has to be a PR opportunity here if it's done properly: Affordable, sustainable protein for the masses.
Yes, promoting it as healthy & sustainable is key
We need more people eating it to help control them
It’s not healthy and sustainable for the deer to have such numbers around
