Anyone growing Grouse this year ? how's it looking ? given our long term lack of insecticide use this BYDV (and OBM I think ?). resistant trait makes a lot of sense to mitigate against damage in future years ?

Is RAGT's Grouse the only variety with this trait or are there others ?

@Feldspar have you looked at this given your recent posts / tweets ?

I need to look at it. Going to be an interesting year of yield maps I think try and work out just how much of a hit we've had. I remember for Wolverine I think NIAB's view was it was sufficiently worse on disease and yield and not THAT much better on BYDV in their trials that it wasn't worth it. It's going to be very interesting to see their BYDV trials this year. As I've said, we don't have good data on just how often we should expect a year like this year.

We had 3t on order despite my “BIPO only” reservations. Then I saw the Grouse in a trial at Bishops Burton and it looked shocking. It’s a shame as it‘s the trait we desperately need but with disease resistance too.

Well I’ve got 4t on order to try … will probably go in after winter oats (which got bydv this year). I don’t think there’s a great deal of Grouse seed available . It looked a lot better than the adjacent plot of Wolverine which I saw in my local NIAB trials this week but yes it will need a decent fungicide programme. I think it’s worth a try.

You were quite rude to those of us using insecticide as I recall. (Nb something I rarely do but will definitely do on early drilled if I see aphids)

i’ve certainly never intended to be rude - i have just consistently said we have no no big issues with bydv in 12yr without insecticide use and when we have been able to see infection it has been no worse than other crops locally that i believe we’re sprayed with insecticide and even seed dressed when allowed

i’ve also agreed in the past that bydv is clearly a bigger issue in sone parts of the uk than others

we don’t have a problem this year but i’m sure if anyone looked hard enough in any year it would always be possible to find sone infected plants

So being serious why do you want to grow bydv resistant/tolerant wheat? Agree re OBM but think that LBM is the next big thing

insurance I guess in case one year we do see high levels of bydv and to reduce the background loss that i suspect are present in all crops from low levels that are hardly visible but probably costing some yield ?

we have always grown OBM resistant varieties

I maybe mistaken but I thought I heard that RAGT had taken Grouse out of RL trials.
If that is correct probably tells you all you need to know about how they view overall performance of Grouse 😉
Wolverine was a hopeless variety in many trials, we will keep using the insecticide as necessary here as we have no choice in this part of the SW.

Same here,we have no choice, even had a little BYDV in a crop sown at the end of October which also had one insecticide.
The SFI no insecticide payment really infuriates me as it really is a Postcode payment and directly discriminates against us in the West/Southwest.

Tbh until a couple of years ago I wondered why I bothered spraying for it. Then one field I sprayed half the field and stuff happened and didn't get the other half sprayed. To a line the next spring no bydv where sprayed and loads in the rest. Maybe worse being next to a river but who knows

I’ve got a seed crop of it. It’s grown well, but been slow developing all season being 5-7days behind other varieties on spray timings. Not had any issues keeping it clean at all. No news to report on yields yet (obviously), but looks decent.

Edit: drilled mine 12th October
In reply to question about autumn growth.
Not really. It certainly didn’t stand out as being behind anything else until I started dissecting plants for working out spray timings.
As posted on another thread
