Harvest 2023

All I’ll say is “Never again!”

I cannot sleep without dreaming all night of the disaster the stuff is to harvest this year, thanks to 2 heavy rain showers when it was at its most vulnerable in June, flattening it, followed by that very wet July, making it ret too soon

I hate the thought of going to bed, knowing that I will constantly fret about it all night and cannot sleep properly.
The Elderly Owner of this farm simply hasn’t a clue of the stress, the had work or the mess that will be left if we cannot harvest the dammed stuff to get the next crop in. Unfortunately he has made the situation far worse in a conversation we had on Monday, which obviously hasn’t helped, at all!!

I really hope it starts to go better today, because I am at my wits end about it all.
And after what happens to me health wise last year, I’m literally frightened.

in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter, it’s insignificant vs your health and well-being, you are doing your best and that’s as much as can reasonably be asked of anyone

This story is giving me cold sweats having just committed to winter linseed for the first time 😂 we never seem to struggle with spring linseed…is it really a completely different animal? The nice man at premium crops said id only have pigeons to worry about so why should he lie?!! 😂

i noticed years ago that very few people seem to grow winter linseed for very long !

all i needed to know !

Spring barley that had regrowth and some rubbish regrow in that just won’t die even with roundup and then the winter beans to go. About a day and half total for us

It wouldn’t have been the top of my list but we need to replace beet on a block of land that won’t do a second wheat very well. DD spring linseed in a dry spring isn’t very exciting either so thought we would have a go at winter. At least I’ll know I tried.

All planned with contractors to combine our 45acres S.Bly tomorrow afternoon and also get the straw round baled while nice and dry.

Then helpfully at 7pm this evening we get an hour of rain and steady drizzle. Doubt we will get it soon now as this weekend looks very iffy with North Westerly showers meaning we always get hit!

With most South Westerly showers we tend miss the lot, but when it’s North Westerlies we are only four miles inland so nothing to stop them!

Maybe looking better for us from the first weekend of September?

I know it’s not late yet, but you just want to get it all in and finished with!
As the actress allegedly said to the bishop.

Not spending money you don’t have is a start
Some of the richest people in the world got there by spending money they didn't have.
If you want to make it big you have to be prepared to take risks, me?
I just bimble along from day to day, sometimes sort of spending money I haven't got, but with the assets to backe up.

My brothers and I refer to ours as “I’m 86, you know!”
Ironically, about the same age as my employer.
Thats one of my mothers stock phrases ...
Unfortunately as dementia advances after a series of strokes i suspect she wont be with us for much longer .
We that is myself ,wife , and workman Norman are caring for her at home with the assistance ot two paid nurses .
The rest of the family pay flying visits whats new ??
My mother might be costing me a fortune right now but she is worth every penny after all where would we be without our mothers ...

100%, but if you spend money you don’t have you actually have to get off your arse to generate more, I know that well. Lots of people like the lifestyle and spend more than they can afford without actually creating more wealth.

You don’t want it. It’s 2 million too much. A big rundown house, the front looks ok but from the field side it looks like a ruin, windows falling out, a grain store that is 50 years out of date and doesn’t work, a yard that is a complete mess, land full of blackgrass because of the owners decisions.
It could be amazing, but has been run down for many years. Such a shame. I’ve tried.
I take it your hoping to purchase it then with that review 😉😂😂

Now you have reminded me of something. I went racing one new years day 15-20 years ago to cheltenham. Between oxford and cheltenham there were 2 claas cutting linseed. The straw was being burnt as they went. It was cold and dry. Obviously not ideal but they were salvaging what looked like an acceptable crop as I recall.
All this talk of Dads, and the comment above, reminded me of sitting in The Dominator with my father on New Year's Day cutting flat Spring Linseed. I've no idea what the year was, but its a fond memory....It was the only time that i recall Dad not getting annoyed that the aircon solenoid wire had broken - it used to melt in the heat of the summer as it was routed over the rocker cover of the Merc engine, but when it broke the engine was always too hot to fix it.....So many happy days spent sitting with Dad, inhaling his pipe smoke, getting red hot tobacco embers all over my legs, sweating our rubbish off, listening to Jonners, while all the time trying not to sit on the drum disconnect switch behind me. Come to think of it, I also remember the wet sponge drawer in the front of the roof of the previous Dominator that used to spill smokey, dusty water if he went up a hill, or accelerated too fast....That wasnt such a fond memory.

Either way, they are great things to have in my memory bank, so thank you all for reminding me.

And Two Tone, I hope you manage to get through the rest of it without further damage to yourself. You seem wonderfully aware of the effects of this stress, which is such a valuable & lifesaving skill, which at the time usually (To me, anyway) feels as helpful and irritating as someone saying "don't panic, or try and relax, it'll all be a distant memory soon", but it is a massive talent. Good luck & keep talking.
....Small consolation I know, but I also remember getting a local chap that had a few screws loose, to mow and bale the last 20 odd acres in mid January, followed by some serious arson, and a monumental crop of Sleipner the following year (I think Dad ended up ploughing the linseed stubble and fallowing). That Sleipner was the first time Dad managed 5t/ha+ on the headland, but pulled out to cut some Winter Oats which were shedding like crazy & by the time he'd got back to it, the Sleipner was flat as a pancake.....Same bloke came in and mowed & took it away for his cattle......Never did invoice Dad. The point being, that the following crop *should* be epic!

Take care,

Tim

Only ever cut spring linseed hottest part of the day nh8070 years ago aslong as knife and fingers were good you'd fly slight bit of overcast sky forget it. Straw burned real well and hot. Just a thought but a stray match may just save your sanity. Wish I could be of help but good luck. Mow and bale would get rid of it aswell.
Stripper harvests it no bother at all in any weather

The compulsory harvest finished photos. Started with the old faithful John Deere 2066 which we've kept. And finished with the new to us axial flow. Computer said 141ha in 66 threshing hours. 44 hours cutting so shows so much time you lose unloading on the headland like we do
