Slack nuts!

By pure chance I noticed that 2 nuts were missing on rear wheel of Valtra N174 and 3 others were finger tight.Luckily, because of weather tractor had spent past month sitting in shed doing nothing.Prior to that the tractor had ploughed 25 ha.Never had an issue with slack wheel nuts before ,on anything. Is this a problem with incorporated washers on this design of nut?

Do what the truck people do. Get some plastic pointers that fit on the wheel nuts . You'll tell at a glance if any move
They're good providing people look at them. I've seen a few interesting ways of fitting them too.
There's a right way and a wrong way of fitting wheels, quite surprising how many tyre companies get it wrong. Of course they need re-torque too.

Now Then..
I always oil the threads and the space between the nut and washer. Make sure there isn't an excess of paint between the axle flange & the wheel mounting surface.
Tighten all the nuts to the manufacturers specified torque. Then check after a few hours work..
Manufacturer's torque figures are without oil. If you apply oil you will overstretch the studs.

If I remember right a little WD40 or something around the washer on the OP's style nuts is required but It's been a while since I sat through a lecture on it:sleep:
Yes, oil or something in the dish the nut sits in can help, but not on the threads. After fitting a spare wheel that had been on the bonnet of our LR IIA for a while, the nuts stuck in the dish. The only way to loosen them was to put the long bar on the socket resting on the road, then drop the clutch in reverse. That freed them but put a hole in the tarmac.

I had a problem with wheel nuts working loose (even had wheels coming off!) on a fleet of trucks I used to manage.

Problem was traced to a tyre fitter "gunning" up the wheel nuts as tight as he could. As said, this stretches the threads on the studs.

Thank you for solving a mystery that troubled me for 10 years. Turning hay, front wheel started wobbling badly. Nuts very loose.

You start imaging all sorts of sinister things. We'd had new tyres put on when we bought it

That can be a problem, there's also the problem of the wheel and other surfaces not being cleaned properly, no oil on the nuts of the type in the OP and no good re torque policy. You can do everything right installing them but the odd one will come loose; good checks will spot them.
Easy to re torque a tractor as its at base, harder for trucks on the road.
