God stop these bad memories.
When I was 15 or 16 at August lamb sale got roped in as a runner to take place of one of the regulars away to harvest.
After sale over on loading and the first Artic 3 decker they'd seen. Head yardsman going purple when I was shouting for 3 more 20's. Didn't believe we had pushed 300 on to one truck. Was at one point demanding truck emptied for a recount. IIRC the biggest they had had was "Lummies" 8 legger 3 deck with 170 or 180. Think it was 27 ft . All 3 deckers then were open top. at least when loading you could stand up on the top deck. Only remember covers being used for small bales straw on back loads later in the season.
I'm just to young to have been loading the Lamb trains. Supposed to have been one buyer who filled a train with a days purchase of wedders. Delivered overnight to his farm near Inverness. Railway conveniently dissecting that farm.
How days have changed.
When you think back, the days of 30k chevi lambs a day in Lairg and once the trains stopped they all went on 8 wheelers and drags or 2 deck artics! Between 6-800 a load nowadays and less than half the amount of sheep in the first sale 😣

I’ve spent the last however many years spraying rushes cutting them and putting lime and fert on. This year is the first year I could actually say the calves are bigger less shyte lambs cows stayed out an extra month and there’s been more grub for ewes.
I watched the long range forecast it’s wet for another week or ten days then it’s supposed to be drying up a bit or less wet anyway
You might be right but I'm not gonna hold my breath,
