It definitely is the wrong way around, one of my neighbours was talking about his cousin who brags that he works a minimum of 12 hours a day pretty much 7 days a week.
I asked my neighbour why someone would brag about how long it takes to achieve a living.

I know a guy who comes out at half 7, works all day, has his tea at 7pm and then goes to start feeding and bedding about 500 cattle after that, gets in at 11pm, wife and kids are in bed and that's him until 7:30 am when it starts all over again.
He's just a slave and he's no better off than an African who walks 5 miles a day to get water from a well.
It might be somebody who’s just trying to get on, maybe they are putting new buildings up buying land etc like TP is.
If you are increasing the value of the business you are doing a bit more than just working for a living.
But I agree, we all know people who work all hours just to stand still and that isn’t good.

Past few weeks we have been starting work after 9am. Son can take kids to school, I can do a Sudoku puzzle over breakfast. Stock get fed once a day so why should it be in the dark at 7am?
Same routine at weekends but try to rotate it that one of us gets away quickly so almost a day off.
The Spring is busy enough without making all year harder. I love farming but try not to let the farm run you.

My neighbour used to feed his cattle hay out of the back of his Land Rover on 20 acres next to mine at 06.00 in the morning throughout the winter, he only stopped aged 89 when his deteriorating eyesight meant his family took the truck off him. He didn’t need to be out in the dark with a 20 mile round trip but it was his routine and possibly part of the reason why he is still active while his contemporaries are dribbling in a care home.
Never criticise how others run their lives when it doesn’t affect you.

Hope he wasn't feeding his neighbours by mistake. Glad he could count them!
A friend fed 10 store cattle outside all winter before he remembered he had only put 9 in the field. His neighbour thanked him very much for looking after the bullock

I get the impression dad is always trying get in on the act whereas in reality if Tom hadn't got the insight for modernisation the farm would have failed years ago.
I don’t agree. Dad followed the money and spent wisely so that he could sell direct to the public and avoid being raped by the dairy companies. The existing set up would have lasted his time out and there was no point investing if he didn’t know if Tom wanted to farm, especially on a tenanted farm. I think they rent, but I’m not sure.
Tom has documented the new build on film, which with YouTube royalties has probably pretty much paid for it, I’m guessing. Smart move. Unless they have upped herd numbers, the new set up won’t be making any more money than the old one, assuming they were looking after the cows and they looked to be. It’s just that it had reached the end of its life and no doubt the new one will save a bit of labour.

I have rarely found that spending more time working than not ever allowed me to achieve much, it normally just meant I was achieving 5 or 6 days work diluted over 7 days.

Tom's father bought the farm, the other farm across the road is rented, Tom's father also built a new house and built the farm shop. That's good going to buy a farm, build a new house and a farm shop, I would say the farm yard was next, but Tom being on you tube sped things up

Me too, so I don’t do it except at peak times.

Thanks, I knew they were at another farm nearby, I guess that was rented?
I think it’s amazing too, Andrew comes across to me as a clever bloke.
We managed to buy our farm, but that was about it. Poor milk prices and me not wanting to be a slave to it held us back. I remember a neighbour milking 70 cows and running a pig unit single handed to buy his farm.
Quite a few ICI farms were sold to the tenants in the mid 70s. In 1976 or ‘P’ for potato as it was called round here, some farmers nearly paid for their farms in one year!

I watch it regularly and think it’s great, but I thought he was being a bit soft saying he’s having a day off tomorrow.

We all have days that are “steadier” now & again.

But a day off ?
Am I being harsh ?

Perhaps it’s tiring knowing you have to perform in front of a camera regularly ?

Or maybe he’s too honest, perhaps plenty of us would’ve had the day off & just not mentioned it ?
Honestly I find this attitude appalling. Is it any wonder there's so much poor mental health in farming when people are openly criticising a very successful new dad for taking a day off?

It's just possible that your wording could have been better, but come on man, it seems strange to call someone soft for doing something other than farming.

Yes you’re right
I said it tongue in cheek, we’re all a bit embarrassed about having time off & that’s not a good thing
