It's like the old joke:

What do you say to someone with two black eyes?
Nothing. They've already been told twice already.
People are free to say anything they want.
As I've pointed out (far too many times) if you are NOT a member of a union you do NOT have a say in what that union does, you can have an opinion, but it means nothing.

I am starting to understand why they don't listen to some people though:rolleyes:

Any start up is obscure for a while, If you want to be part of it, you have to be part of it!

The "Leaders" of the BFU are just like you, but they have put their head above the parapet! Put your head up too, and you are one of the "Leaders"

The act of faith is essential, sorry that's how it works!t
I think you'll find people would get rather upset (quite rightly) if I was a BFU member;)

There's plenty of people upset I'm a TFF member.

One final time

You can be a TFF member , no worries but don’t be surprised if as a fellow on the other side of the globe some find your views on a UK farming issue not always aligned to their own views

The comments I make are as a non NFU member on policy matters that directly affect me and with their actions purporting to represent the entire UK farming industry and through the mechanism of Red Tractor . They are a stakeholder in RT and have approved (along with AHDB to whom I have to pay a compulsory levy) the GFC module so wanted by another stakeholder BRC (the retailers).

The NFU purports to represent the UK farming industry to our Minister

I see no reason why I should currently be a member of a trade association (with a name Union) that works directly against my interests and allows membership to parties that have a direct negative impact on my small business

I am a BFU member and wish to see them work exclusively for my interests

What bit of that is wrong and what don’t you get yet ?

Those that didn’t like Jacinda in power over there bellyached like heck . If I said tough you didn’t vote for her so you have no ability to comment or influence things and you have no mechanism to get rid of her , you’d just suck it up I guess

And it was OK for us to change our minds "on our shared path", as it were.

Plenty loved her and the promises made at the beginning and that opinion may have changed, nothing wrong with that in either context when the promises go unfulfilled, or indeed make matters far worse.

We heard "be kind" and the country hasn't ever been so divided, now this is off-topic but that same Orwellian "doublespeak" "doublethink" is really pretty obvious - in either context.

All this talk of bringing people closer together while the actions cause resentment, division, and even hate.

Small wonder if we dare venture down the various rabbit-holes of the commie ideology

"Stakeholder capitalism" is running the asylum, not who you vote for, I think we can be allowed to trade magic for fact?!

🤣🤣 Well I’m not!

Good on you for mixing things up a bit!

I was told on a BFU thread a few months ago , in very plain terms, to keep out of it because I’m not a farmer!

I was politely told the same at the very start!
This is really tricky and sort of cruel. The concept is BFU is an organisation to represent farmers, which means we probably don't want to be taking any income (potentially compromising) from the likes of CF Fertilisers or Cargill.

So then we end up with a policy which says members must be farmers.

This then excludes good guys like yourselves who are involved with ancillary supplies/industries. When I think of my agronomist, grain buyers, etc. many of them absolutely have genuine desires to see farming being profitable and successful. So this is a really hard thing for BFU to exclude such people.

It seems unfair, but I don't really know how to improve the situation. Not that it's my decision. The steering committee discussed it at length. From a personal point of view I'd probably lean towards accepting members on a case by case basis, but then where do you stop? If we accept the one man band grain trader who's a good bloke/girl (and probably would love to farm themselves if it was economically feasible), how do we tell ADM that they're not welcome as members.

It's really hard. I can't say I'm 100% comfortable with existing policy, but don't really know if/how to change it for the better. It's (a cop out), but it's easier to just say "farmers only" ☹️

Why? They do still represent more farmers than any other union/trade body/organisation.

You want to change that, then build an organisation that represents more farmers. To do that, you need to be all inclusive (so not just internet based) and do enough to make people want to join.
Something of a chicken and egg issue here. BFU needs members, and they need to step up and do stuff for the BFU. The BFU has already had a number of impacts.
Join, start a "chapter" in your area to get more members, volunteer to do stuff for BFU, even if it is just standing outside an office with a protest banner.

You can't be one of the "Someone should, anyone could, no one did" people.

Congratulations, (y)

So @Grass And Grain could @Cab-over Pete join the BFU if he wanted to ?

Not sure if someone would be considered a farmer if they have 5 sheep, or 20, 50, 100, 500, etc.

Someone could have 1,000 sheep in a shed with no land. Someone else might have 5 sheep on 500 acres.

Don't know if this helps, but farmers can join the BFU. Your guess is as good as mine as to what constitutes a farmer. I know... it's as clear as mud.

Personal opinion, but would think it's someone who genuinely attempts to derive a reasonable proportion of their income from growing plants or keeping livestock.
