Welsh Sustainable Farming Scheme AND Protests

Every land parcel needs to be tested in the last 5 years iirc, so you could delay sampling until 2028 if you wanted to, if every parcel was sampled in 2023.

They are looking at sampling for soil OM on top of the standard tests though, and thinking of adding other requirements too, such as worm counts and/or fungal measurements of some kind and/or soil structure assessments.
No, there’s play in what they are after, if the test is within 5 years that’s acceptable.

The worm counts wasn’t mentioned or fungi or soil structure? At the Llanarth meeting

They told us that at Welshpool too. However, you are out of pocket changing to SFS as every UA incurs a cost to your business, whereas the BPS does not.
The SFS payment (so far unknown) would need to be higher than the current BPS in order to not be ‘out of pocket’, due to those extra costs incurred.
All I have to pay for is carbon capture, and that will be on farming connect. I have all the rest covered, health plan, bio security, woods, ponds, habitat. I got £8000 2023, £9000 2022, £15,000 2021, yes I agree I need to know 2024 payment, but they have that delay joining penalty! I tick the box now.

Have filled in the Govt Consultation form today, the one on the website- not for the fainthearted! All the questions seem to be steered towards the acceptance of the scheme as it stands. The NFU one is probably easier, but I wanted to put in personal examples of how it would affect our farm. Will probably be totally disregarded as not the response they were looking for! I urge everyone to respond to this consultation by whatever route- we must show the strength of feeling over the decimation of the Welsh Agricultural Industry. By the way, totally agree with Bald Rick, now's the time to march on the Senedd and make our voices heard!
I’ve had to watch painfull family feuds on who’s farming’ I challenge the big guys! I’ve led a modest life on a sucker herd following my fathers legacy of 50 years? The complacent don’t care about ME!
The fact that farmers are even considering going along with this nonsense means that spineless Welsh farmers have already given up.
For the amount of money involved on lowland farms, tell them to stuff their schemes and hostage money where the sun don’t shine attached to a big cactus.

I don't see many "going along with this nonsense" tbh
There is a lot of confusion and even anger but no one I've met was tongue out to sign on the dotted line.

Lot, though, are worried about how to fill the BPS hole in their income

We attended a Welsh Government Roadshow in Monmouthshire yesterday evening. Extremely well attended and the mood was definitely not in favour of any of the proposals. I had an opportunity to stand up and read out something I prepared earlier! See below. I also handed out a copy to the Government representatives giving the presentation.

FOR THE ATTENTION OF THE WELSH GOVERNMENT

RE: PROPOSED SUSTAINABLE FARMING SCHEME

Recently Russia has been using food security as a weapon of war. With the serious unrest in the world, with Israeli’s fighting Palestinians, Russia fighting with Ukraine and the Americans and UK at present bombing areas in Iran.

With all these Worldwide conflicts taking place, which have every possibility of escalating, this puts our reliance on food imports from all over the World at high risk of being strongly disrupted.

This surely should be a very important time to safeguard production of food in Wales.

So the idea of planting 10% our good productive farmland with trees in addition to creating another 10% of habitat has to be considered unworkable, and dangerously short-sighted of the Welsh Government.

As far as the environment goes, this proposal will have a limited impact on carbon emission targets.

During the Covid Pandemic it was proven that there was a dramatic reduction in carbon emissions, as a result of the restrictions of vehicles on the road and air traffic……. BUT British Farmers continued to farm during this period with the same stock, crops, etc.

So why are we now being financially penalised when it seems that we are not the biggest offenders in this respect.

How do the Welsh Government expect Welsh Farmers to keep up or increase their productivity when they continue to devalue the work we do?

Does the Welsh Government feel that the general public understand the repercussions of implementing this Scheme, with regard to increasing food prices and possibly increased inflation?

If the Welsh Government doesn’t listen to the strong feelings of the Welsh Farmers, we could see a similar situation that is happening in France, Germany, Poland and other parts of Europe happening here. Do they really want that in Cardiff?

I think quite a few will, begrudgingly, try to make it work, if it continues in its present guise, myself included. Most sectors of ag just cannot survive at current output prices without support.
It will certainly lead to a contraction of the industry, with the service industry hit particularly hard (when times get hard the first thing that stops is spending, always).

Interesting meeting by Welsh Assembly Staff tonight , held locally and went through two talks to large groups of people.
Some had a go at them from the start others asked concerned questions in the Q&A session at the end of each talk.

Staff had worked in the RPA for years and in charge of Glastir and other environment schemes and payments sections for years so knew it inside out.

As explained nothing set in stone yet and time to get any questions in at the Consultation period that's now open, so things can and may get changed before starts.

Min. 10% Tree cover and Habitat cover explained and 17 points (if applicable) that's to be implemented and most doing them all now already?

New Maps and your farm existing tree cover calculations to be sent out in the summer?

Tenanted and Tenancy land seems issues they need addressing.

Entitlements etc phased out and easier for new entrants and youngsters to join as ALL VOLUNTARY and meeting certain criteria.

Seems ok but of course NO PAYMENT values published yet !😮
