Ssen pylons

Something similar is likely to happen here too, a firm called Bute energy, I was told there will be a windfarm off the West of Scotland, the power will be in the sea til it hits north Wales (can't have power lines in England!), then will go straight down through Wales (Pylons) and turn left at Swansea and over to England.

My question is how much Carbon is emitted making the concrete for the pylon bases, and metal for the pylons? I know it cost more to plough in underground cables, but is the Carbon cost greater for Pylons?
Lot of the pylon lines seem to be running to the east coast of Scotland then off shore cable to England.

Then you read articles in the news how power companies are removing Pylons in scenic places and undergrounding. Makes you mad

Ssen are in a big hurry to get this all done by 2030 so the government will meet it targets and they can go round the world bragging. People who live on the route will have to put up with their rushed, ill thought out projects for generations to come. But hey, the priminister will be able to brag at COP whatever how good we've done.

At the outset of these schemes, they pay token payment rates for survey/ foot access etc across the 1km width and pay agents fees too, now in a lot of cases behind the scenes they know it is a waste of money and know where they want to site equipment but have to go through the 'motions'. So some people think they have got a victory altering cable route when it was never touching them anyway. The route will have been decided by a team of highly paid people up in ivory towers who you will never see. If you are the unlucky one there is not a lot you can do to fight it but you can get a lot of mitigating circumstances to be allowed for. This is where you need to be creative.
on a light hearted note , going back to the seventies the hydro wanted to put a new line through the middle of the farm , agent sat down at the kitchen table with mum and dad showing route of new line , mum said no way it will spoil her view and led the guy to the living room window , he agreed and the new line was installed all around the farm boundary

These days it's all designed with computer software by people far away in offices. Up until a few weeks ago the closest they got was the arial survey last summer. Finally some bod turned up and had a poke about but never spoke to me. I find it sickening that they plan all this without even coming first to see where people live. We are just contours on a computer screen to them

believe me i feel your pain , we had a compulsory purchase order put on us when pipe line came through in the early 2000 ands . we had planning issues with the previous pipe line and were due compo from transco , they kept telling us to go back in for planning time and time again , finally they took over the planning application with us still arguing our case with the compulsory order on us , this time it sailed through with hse withdrawing there objection for the application , the country really is corrupt ! the annoying thing these guys are making billions and offer us a pittance in compo for there projects

From what I hear there is a one off £10 k per pylon payment when it’s all finished.and compensation for lost revenue for crops.had a meeting about all this last week and they want to put a 700m long haul road across my land.they hope to use crushed concrete but that’s not available so it will be type one granit.around £30 ton locally.700m x 6m x .450 amounts to 1890cubic metres x 2.7 (2.7 ton per cube ) is 5103 tons which is 255 8 wheeler loads.god knows how our local roads will cope being pretty much single carriageways.thats excluding 60x60 base around pylon and all the material to be dug out.60 cube of concrete under each pylon leg so that’s 240 cube per pylon.material being dug out they want to use in land fill but I refused this so they will build banks and landscape with trees etc.i asked who will get planning permission but I was told they will do as they please And no one can stop them as it’s for the national good.the damage coming is horrendous and everyone local is very annoyed and upset about it.this is all going on over 180 km and I shudder to think of the cost but of course it will all end up on our bills.we have had surveys for everything you can imagine and after refusing access I’ve got an order against me but when I know they are coming there are locals who give surveyors grief and tell them to leave.its all a horrific situation and we are just being walked over.if you are having these monstrositys keep fighting.

Do you get to keep the road once they've finished with it?

The road will be in the wrong place running diagonly across 3 fields leaving 6 triangular fields which will be a pain in the arse to work.not that they are bothered.they said they will remove road and I can keep the material.a pile of type one granit around 5000 ish tons is a massive pile and no doubt the envoiremen agency would not like that.they said they would repair all my farm tracks but they are in good condition anyway and they certainly won’t be using them anyway.ive told them I’ll not have them in my yard and they have to put a gateway across a ditch to access the site.my main farm drive has been made inaccessible to low loaders as I’ve been expecting excavtors for months to do the test holes.also got a locked steel gate to stop em getting in.al very stressful as you can imagine

It might surprise you how much 5000 ton looks when it's in one pile. That stuff is pretty dense, it won't take up as much space as you'd think. Very handy material to have on a farm, that pile would do you for the rest of time and you could always sell a bit off anyway

I’d have to sell some.still got a big pile of crushed concrete from when I done my pig shed devolopment 7 years ago.I don’t know how the building trade will cope as most of it will go to these projects.

@hoff135 i feel your pain. We are being bombarded on all sides by these developments. Got 2 huge windfarms planned on both sides of us, the pylon line straight through the middle, already an underground cable and letters in yesterday for another underground cable! ( it’s from another windfarm to a substation so they got told to feck off!)

it is very stressful and it is taking its toll on people. I almost wish I didn’t care about all that’s going and that it didn’t bother us mentally but you have have to stand up for what you think is right and try to fight it.
Most people are completely oblivious to what is going on around them and couldn’t care less.

wife was speaking to a sse guy last year , his words were the route is planned and it wont be changed in any way , they need the power down in england so dont expect the gov. to help you out . weve enough power for scotland , these new lines are for further south
They won’t want the power if they’re going nuclear.
or it’s probably just to say that they use green energy

There will be nothing in the Highlands left shortly. What's worse is ssen are a local company, based in Inverness I believe, treating their own communities like dirt

We have a new line planned with discussion ongoing from the start. They definitely need planning permission and your agent should be on the case regarding the access route. You will be compensated for the awkward triangles and if you don't want the rock then they have to take it away. It will have a value so would cost them nothing. You shouldn't be organising any of that.
If unhappy speak to the neighbours and get a new agent.

My wife worked in the department, she seen a Scottish government plan to depopulate the highlands and use it for renewables. Couldn’t believe it to be honest until someone else in a completely different line of work seen the same plan!

Yet they tell us this will encourage people to stay or move to the area! My future plans for building on my own ground will be wiped off the map

Had a meeting with NG agents last week.as much as I don’t want any of it I think it will go ahead.we did manage to move some pylons to suit us and agents seem to be helping rather than hindering.instead of pylons being in fields we have got them hopefully moved to the edge of fields.they should be 300 metres apart at 50m tall but they can be moved to an absolute maximum distance of 425m but pylon will then be60m tall.

I really sympathise with you and know what you’re going through.we are just being bullied as land owners and not many local people seem bothered.a neighbouring farmer told me couple weeks ago it was coming so I’ll have to accept it and I thanked him for his support.he will be closer to them than me.other neighbouring farmers have been very quiet about it all and I’ve heard nothing from any of them which I think is very dissapointing.at the end of the day all we can do is be a pain n their arses.in local paper today one headline reads, labour to push through pylons which don’t help either.we have massive support from local government and many mp’s but I’m not holding my breath

Yes it will get worse under labour, they are hell bent on using the countryside to sell what they claim will be cheap electricity to their voters in the cities. The claim it will be cheap is a con, those with in the renewable sector have even being saying bills will have to rise to pay for all this.

My only hope is it can be delayed long enough for the whole net zero scam to come crashing down, which it eventually will but it will probably be too late for many

Highland clearances all over again, I think our "ruling classes" all parties included (and the leaders of the civil services, non governmental bodies and charities) seem to walk over the cares/concerns and opinions of the people.

Kier Starmer has said in the past that what Labour is doing in Wales, they will do to the whole of the UK, so watch out!
