Ssen pylons

Kier Starmer has said in the past that what Labour is doing in Wales, they will do to the whole of the UK, so watch out!
Yes we will have the snp and labour against us. Tories are to, but some of their mps in Scotland have taken the side of their constituents, so has our lib dem mp. But the snp are silent on the concerns raised, and instead twist it and say they want to see great benefits to the community. Biggest benefit would be no pylons at all. I'm told by the time the power reaches England a 1/3 of the power will be lost.

I have a feeling here in Wales, everything Mark Drakeford does is to make sure he can stand up and say "Wales is doing more for climate change than anyone else (especially England)" and I think the SNP from what I read in the paper is exactly the same.

Yeah it's all for their egos, bragging to the world how we are leading the way.

The power loss over a distance is something I would like to know, we have pylons about 150m from the house and in the damp weather they really buzz, makes me think if they are buzzing like that all the way down there wont be any left by the time it gets to the end.

SSE have increased the size of their substation at beauly from 60 to over 800 acres!! Apparently they have bought an 800ac farm at Peterhead for a substation aswell!
Can only hope a public enquiry will happen which will delay it. If it can be delayed long enough the whole idea might fall apart, or they might have yo come up with another means of taking power south, they way they whole thing is being carriedout has been a disgrace from the start. But if they are already buying land they obviously think the job is in the bag

800 acre seems colossal, especially around Beauly, can’t think there is that much flat land about there but guess they can work on hills 🤷‍♂️

What is the story in Peterhead now @quattro?

Don't think it's flat, I believe the substation is still 60 acres but they want over 800. People are speculating that this is for future substations, battery storage etc. Some of it is for landscaping and tree planting around the site. Still a massive amount of land they are allowed to take control of

The local hydro station has just had a major upgrade to connect to 400kv lines and the extra area would be around an acre.
Solar farm and battery bank near here will be 150 acres. 800 acres would be a massive area surely to include solar, not just infrastructure

guy i mentioned above told me that the problem with burying the cable was the size of the hole for insulation , it was so unbelievable to my thinking that i wont repeat it here
The problem with routing these very high voltage cables underground is multiple. Not just the insulation but a greater problem is heat. They generate heat by voltage loss the hotter they get, the greater the voltage loss and so on. This is of course grossly exacerbated by the presence of the insulating material. Each cable requires a half metres tunnel or pipe to be suspended in.
this is not an issue with aerial or sub sea but a huge problem underground.

The first set of new electric infrastructure in the York area was approved by the SoS a couple of days ago. If interested, you can search for "Yorkshire GREEN" on the NSIP portal, where you can see what details go into these schemes, and the degree, if any, of deviation from the original plan submitted, and the final result.

It's incredible, given the largest substation in the UK, and second largest in Europe at Blackhillock is only around 32 acres .......
We farm close to Blackhillock and it's probably about 60ac now with the bits added on, the HVDC bit increased it a fair bit.
We are two years into construction of the Moray West project and the substation for that is on land we used to have.

And now on the other side of us we have Blackhillock 2 which is now called Coachford, they have earmarked about 220ac for that including 25ac of mine on an outfarm.
Quite surreal going to the public meting and seeing the map of your own fields with construction compounds and Suds ponds on them!😯😯
We have had no meetings or dealings with SSEN other than a phone call clarifying ownership.
It means that we are going to have 3 substations within 2km of my house.

Next door neighbour but one is likely to have 3 new pylon lines running through her land, Beauly to Coachford, Coachford back to the existing Blackhillock, and from Coachford to Rothienorman, all in a 700m wide strip. Her place will be completely ruined.
It's all up for consultation but the way they are chucking money at bit even before planning permission it's a done deal as far as I can see.

And it doesn't stop with the current proposals.

On Wednesday the "Beyond 2030 Technical Report" was released. See HERE

"In some cases, enabling works also provide wider system benefits providing an efficient means to
meet multiple network drivers. It is recommended to upgrade and/or rebuild the circuits and
equipment between Longside, Peterhead, Persley, Kintore, Fetteresso, Alyth, and Kincardine
(known as PKUP). Moreover, it is recommended to develop a new circuit from North East Scotland
to the Central Belt (known as NHNC). The NHNC option forms part of the new north to south
electrical spine. It provides the greatest transfer capability of all those assessed. Based on initial
assessments, alternative offshore options considered on the West and East Coast between
Scotland and England or Wales have significant environmental constraints, excessive costs and
offer less network capability. These and other alternative options will continue to be assessed and
developed to ensure optimal future reinforcement strategy for the Great Britain electricity
transmission system. This option is also currently required to enable the development of a robust
and reliable offshore network connection and will be reappraised in the detailed design stage. "

So there will be another 2 x 400 kv lines ( as well as the existing TKUP proposal, so potentially 3) coming down the East coast of Scotland.

So if you don't have a pylon line proposal near you now, just wait a few months....
