GFC was to go ahead - now not going ahead

I apologise I gave the wrong first name

I almost wrote “that mad Capper woman” and that would have been even more damning for the pro British farming and apple and pears lady

I meant

The lady who calls for me to calve my heifers at 2 years and with a title backed by ABP advocates me shovelling cereals down the throats of my finishing cattle to get them away by 24 and ideally 22 months or less “to save the planet “

The NBA paper (now “withdrawn” but still in the hands of DEFRA policy wonks ) advocated this and more

Unforgivable and the CEO of the NBA knows full well my feelings on the matter
I reluctantly left the NBA because of it, even though a lot of my cattle are intensively raised.

I’m sure they do. But I doubt the nfu are making decisions based upon ‘what Vader said on a forum’.
The power of the dark side is strong....

Nfu have had plenty of messages at them about gfc from bfu supporters and they been spammed with out leaflet about opposing gfc.
They read here and see they were going to be potentially asked publicly their stance via farming media.

So what I see I they now put out statement that 'sort' of Says no to gfc, but does not state they against it full stop.
Leaves the door open for gfc.2

To me that is very poorly put together article. It says the 5 bodies but doesn't name them. More than once says farmers unions but again no names. Mentions that NFU and AHDB sit on red tractor board. Not clear if Tom is speaking to FW personally or as president of and on behalf of NFU.

I wouldn't be getting the flags out and celebrating just yet.

No, those were exactly my thoughts too. No mention of NFU, could be any 5 bodies
Second paragraph of FWi post

issued by the NFU, NFU Cymru, NFU Scotland, the Ulster Farmers Union and the AHDB states that, while they “continue to support the basic objectives that underpin Red Tractor”, they “strongly recommend” that the Greener Farms Commitment (GFC) development be discontinued.

So the farming unions and AHDB look like they are trying to get the AFS board to change tack on GFC and re-engage with farmers.

Appears to sound great, apart from the farming unions and AHDB all sit on the AFS board!!!!!

Taken from the BRC website (see below) - interesting to see that last year AFS were working on standards not only for an environmental module, but also personnel and a scope 3 module. Wonder what has happened to those????

AFS Update 26.6.23
Background
• AFS remains the key assurance body for UK farm produce
• This briefing is based on a recent Ownership Body meeting (BRC is a joint owner of AFS alongside NFU, NFUS, Dairy UK, AHDB and UFU)
Purpose
• AFS wants to ensure it remains relevant and has reviewed its purpose
• Wants AFS to be pro-active in its marketing and present a point of difference to imported food
• Wants to be a world leader in farm assurance and recognised as such by consumers
Wants to anticipate changes in consumer demand, which is why it is developing environment, personnel and scope 3 modules
• I raised the future importance of nature net positive and the role AFS could play in helping retailers demonstrate their compliance – there didn’t seem to be a great deal of awareness of nature net positive so I have sent AFS a recent presentation given to BRC members
• AFS continues to push itself as a brand, the review of the purpose and an increased spend on tv marketing demonstrate that. We and members have pushed back on this both in meetings and through our reps on the AFS Board and sector boards but they believe building a brand is the right approach

I presume "the statement goes on" is the statement put out by the 5 farming unions. Seems to suggest they still want it but just to be done more openly.
My reading of it (and from another media source) is that something might be agreed eventually but that it shouldn’t have any involvement from the bloody WWF. Who appointed them head influencer in the first place?!?

She came on here a few weeks ago but swiftly disappeared when confronted with some questioning; none of which was nasty or aggressive, just serious questions and points.

It was quite sad that she left and didn’t attempt to defend herself in any way. They don‘t do themselves any favours by scarpering, just makes them look guilty as charged.

Yep

Yeah.
He'll be breathing a sigh of relief, thinking he's off the hook ........

............ for the time being maybe.

Some of us won't forget :asshat:

I'd cut him a bit of slack, he was potentially doing his old bosses job. It would have been better of had admitted, but it's not about individuals it's about institutions working in secret creating unfair trading cartels.

A mea culpa from the NFU and AHDB ought to be in order as a result of this debacle but I doubt that will happen. But they've done the right thing.

The battle may be won but the war is far from over. Credit to the bfu, tff and the general grafting farmers for putting a shot across the bows and making Mr Bradshaw see sense. Also as it seems credit to him for listening, far far better than his predocessor.
The battle is not won over GFC untill the assured board officially withdraws it...

As it stands the AHDB and some farming unions have called on the board to stop it.. Would not surprise me in the least for there to be a RT board meeting with the NFU and AHDB sat at the table and the board still votes the GFC thru to be introduced on 1 April.. and the NFU/AHDB board members voting yes for it to be introduced at that meeting !

Even with my cynical brain, I don’t think that will happen.

How many votes do AHDB and the NFUs have compared to other board members though? Are ‘we’ still in the minority?

I think if AFS pushed on with GFC, given the statements today by AHDB and NFU, they’d probably walk away from RT and advise us all to do likewise, which would mean RT would cease to be.

Both the AHDB and Tom Bradshaw have lied time and time again over the GFC issue since the RT board meeting last Sept so untill RT have officially withdrawn launching the GFC i would take the above statement by the NFU/AHDB with a pince of salt.

The NFU/AHDB statement means nothing if the RT board vote the GFC thru at the next board meeting.

The above statement could just be a PR job for the NFU/AHDB to say we tried to stop the GFC but could not so do not blame us now its introduced..

The BRC will certainly not be happy and they may well threaten to pull out of RT and launch their own scheme anyway unless the GFC is introduced.

The battle is far from won yet and never count your chickens untill all the eggs have hatched............
