I have saved myself a lot of disappointment by assuming that everyone at a machinery dealership is incompetent until proven otherwise.

Common phrases in machinery listings that mean nothing: Field ready, In good order, Been through the shop, Inspected, Needs nothing, One owner, Clean, Ready to work, etc. Just assume they are all misrepresented or outright lies until you can prove otherwise, standards are too subjective

Appreciate that in an ideal world I would have viewed it first but as professional machinery dealers it should have been very obvious to them that it was a long way from being in 'full working order'!

The bit that is annoying me is their claim to have reduced the price to reflect disclosed faults - which is total fabrication.

Perhaps I got unlucky with this particular machine but then again the customer service post sale has been pretty terrible!

@b13
What have you got in writing or on the invoice from them ??

How do you manage from so far Kenya!?

This guy couldn't leave Cheshire!
When Dad was alive he'd do it. Then my son took it over. I will come over to see machinery if necessary a £ 1000 spent on a plane ticket can save a lot more than that. However if I'm buying from someone I know like Claas Eastern I will take their word for it. I've actually talked to this Stuart Barclay ( I think they own Sharmans ) and he didn't strike me as dishonest.

Everyone is saying don't buy sight unseen from someone you don't know and I couldn't agree more.
Done a few things. Never been done as such yet. Might be disappointed if its not quite as good as you think but just get on with it. It's not easy running around looking at stuff especially if you get there and think it's no use.

I think £ 25,000 is too much to take a gamble on. Obviously if you are working on your own maybe you can't take the time to travel half way across the country so surely you have to look closer to home.

I'm not sure who I spoke with but they told me a machine was out on hire. I googled the no plate and it was at Cambridge in the un sold lots. I think I got lucky as it was probably crap. Not to say that was Stuart.

I was in Sharmans at Grantham and saw a Claas 640 I thought might suit. I asked about it and they said they'd get in touch. I got a phonecall from Scotland I think they send trade ins etc up there. He told me about the tractor and as I'd seen it nothing he told me was untrue.
I'm not a fan of second hand tractor dealers. It annoys me to see the auction prices in a farming magazine and then see the same tractors in a dealers at a great markup.

Probably. I don't like spending too much and was always busy. Machinery is cheaper in England than up here so its worth it sometimes to chance it. I might not with a more complex tractor who knows. I wouldn't moan about it if I got it wrong!

How did the OP know the clocks had been changed?

What reason did the dealer give for offering it to the OP at a discount? Did dealer mean "with faults accepted" or "sold as seen"

As everyone says-better to buy local.

The faults described are not acceptable from a dealer unless they made it clear it was sold as seen.
Yes, it is always good to see a machine but not so important from an established dealership.
If you went on a dry day you would not pick up the leak. Would you really test all the lights, wait for the heater to warm up, listen to the radio and test the seat. Most dealers would be embarrassed if you did.
I wouldn't expect those faults on a £24k machine. Maybe on a £5000 machine

It's obvious to see from reading these comments people have very different opinions.
One man's view can easily be different to anothers, hence it is crucial to view with your own eyes.
The comment that it's not possible to view due to distance tells a story, in my eyes spending the sort of money mentioned and not been willing to drive a few hours is frightening, I have driven hundreds of miles and found things not as described but would never consider buying unsold.
Could probably have been sorted out face to face. But unfortunately that will now be out the window.

HRN would be OK. Can't trust anyone really though. I get the impression agritrac exports is where they sell any crap abroad. I'm not sure it's the same company either same family but there are loads of barclay selling machines.
Neither of them HRN/Netherton have enough mechanics or the time to check stuff over properly.
Mate had issue with a tractor he bought ,agreed a price then they found a major issue with it making it un road worthy.they wanted him to stand to the cost of fixing it.

It might not be the right way to do it but if i ever buy anything unseen it will do it through an independent finance company and if its a good rep you deal with they will more or less tell you straight away whether its a dealer they want to work with or not. I bought an unseen tractor off parris tractors and couldn't of been happier with it. But at the same time no money had gone out my bank before the tractor was in our yard. If it wasn't right when it turned up i would've organised transport back for it myself.
