£5 coffee

Up early, long drive yesterday so half-way I swung in to a midlands services treat myself to a takeaway coffee.

As I picked up my major chain standard-size latte, I raised an eyebrow as the smiling attendant greeted me with "Anything else? Okay, that'll be just £4.40, please".

Surprised, I later googled "price of a coffee", £4.55 for a latte on Uber Eats (London).

Milk, coffee and electricity all trading far lower than 2022.

£5 coffee not far away.

Later that day I bomb past the same services, retreating back to farm, grateful for my bulk-buy tea-bags and own farm milk at less than a hundredth of the price...

My mam used to take flask shopping , they were born in the 30s and knew how to be thrifty, some of the yooof now just waste money like water
Not just the yoof to be fair !
Off topic, my dad used to love mooching round second hand shops, then would start bartering for stuff with the shop owner, I was embarrassed as a kid , but looking back , it’s how things were when you didn’t have a lot , every penny counted

Rent / mortgage / debts/ interest/ staff and other associated bull sh!t probably carrying huge risk and making a loss . Welcome
To modern 🇬🇧.

commercial rent and rates / tax / employment law/ planning etc probably mean they aren’t exactly making a fortune selling coffee at £5 even

the real reason things have got expensive in the uk is that half the population think working is optional and being fat / lazy or useless is now a “disability“ ………. and they all need keeping in coffee all day
